Movies on Our Radar: The Supernatural Edition

Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton in Only Lovers Left Alive

As theatres may be gearing up for major blockbuster hits such as X-Men: Days of Future Past and silly comedies like 22 Jump Street, films with an artsier premise can often be overlooked. With stylish camerawork, supernatural characters and yes, hot actors (Tom Hiddleston as a vampire?!), here are three supernatural films that are on our radar.

The Double

I absolutely adored Richard Ayoade’s coming-of-age film Submarine back in 2010. But turning in a very different direction, the comedian/director takes a more supernatural approach in his comedy-thriller The Double.

Based on Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s novel of the same name, the film follows a timid man named Simon living a mundane life as a government agency clerk. He’s overlooked at work, scorned by his mother and worst of all, ignored by the woman of his dreams (Mia Wasikowska). But little does he know that his life will turn for the worst with the arrival of his new co-worker James, who just so happens to be his physical double. But as looks are the only thing they share, James begins to take over Simon’s life as the more confident and charismatic version of himself.

Premiering at festivals like TIFF and Sundance, this dark comedy has already received rave reviews. I’m still beating myself up for missing this when it came to Toronto in September. But I guess I’ll just have to be patient and wait until it comes out!

The Double releases in select theatres on May 9.

Under the Skin

From playing the voice of a computer in Her to a New Jersey guidette in Don Jon,  Scarlett Johansson has recently taken more  eclectic roles.

But in her most unusual role to date, Johansson plays an alien seductress in Jonathan Glazer’s sci-fi thriller Under the Skin. As an alien, Johansson’s character arrives on Earth in Scotland in kills a woman in order to take over her body. She then scours highways and backroads while riding in a van looking for male victims. But as her character seems to lack compassion for those around her, she slowly begins to feel something for her victims as the movie progresses.

Judging from the trailer, it’s clear this movie contains several WTF-worthy moments. But I’m super intrigued with how ScarJo is challenging herself with strange roles like this. And paired with the chilling score of the movie, you might want to look out for this if you’re feeling a little more adventurous.

Under the Skin comes out on May 9.

Only Lovers Left Alive

Yes, this may be another vampire movie. But if you’re expecting something like Twilight, then perhaps you should think again.

In Only Lovers Left Alive, Tom Hiddleson and Tilda Swinton play one hot vampire couple. Hiddleston plays Adam, a depressed musician who contemplates suicide until his lover Eve (Swinton) convinces him otherwise through a video chat. Things are back to normal in their romance- which has already endured several centures- when they are reunited. But as Eve’s uncontrollable younger sister Ava (Mia Wasikowska) arrives, their domestic bliss gets disrupted.

Directed by Jim Jarmusch (Broken Flowers), Only Lovers Left Alive looks stylish, romantic and original. If you’re tired of watching the same old vampire stories (and we’re not judging you if you love them!), this might be a film you want to check out. After all, just looking at the chemistry between Hiddleston and Swinton in the trailer is enough to make you blush.

Only Lovers Left Alive releases April 25.
