The next time you scoff at those who read or write fan fiction, perhaps you should think again. After all, one of those stories might just end up on the big screen like Anna Todd’s After, a fanfic written about One Direction’s Harry Styles.
After tells the story of Tessa Young, “an 18-year-old college student with a simple life, excellent grades and a sweet boyfriend” until “she meets a rude boy named Harry, with too many tattoos and piercings who shatter her plans.”
According to Candice Faktor, Wattpad’s general manager, the three-part series has been clicked on more than 500 million times.
Writers on Wattpad don’t get paid for their work, but they do retain copyright ownership of the stories publish. And since Todd’s story has such a big fan following, studios are expected to want to acquire the screen rights to the story. For Wattpad, After is the closest thing the site has experienced to the success of Fifty Shades of Grey, which was originally a Twilight fan fiction that has since become a worldwide bestseller and has inspired an upcoming blockbuster film.
Personally, I have no idea how I should feel about this. But if rabid fan followings are the way to make bank in Hollywood, then by all means!
