Space Jam is one of the best nineties kids movies around and if anyone tells you otherwise, they’re wrong.
The story of how a tiny group of aliens from Moron Mountain tried to kidnap the Looney Tunes gang and basketball’s most famous player, Michael Jordan, for their planet-sized amusement park by challenging them to a game of basketball (but not before stealing the athletic abilities of other pro-ballers like Charles Barkley) is an absolute classic.
Sure, Michael Jordan’s acting was, um, lacking but who cares?! He’s a living basketball legend and a former minor baseball league player! He didn’t need to act to be more popular! SIX CHAMPIONSHIP RINGS, BABY!
Besides, we all know that Bug Bunny, Bill Murray, Wayne Knight and the rest of the Looney Tunes gang carried the movie.
That and inspirational R. Kelly classic, “I Believe I Can Fly.” (I believe I can fly/I believe I can touch the sky/I think about it every night and day/spread my wings and fly away…)
To celebrate the timelessness of this dual live-action/cartoon flick, Funny or Die rounded up a stellar cast of actors, comedians and basketball players to do a live table read of Space Jam back in March.
They generously cut together a 10-minute highlight reel of the table read so sit back and enjoy the likes of Boy Meets World’s Danielle Fishel (TOPANGA!), NBA players Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan, and comedians Nick Kroll and Seth Green embody your favourite cartoons and basketball stars.
Not to spoil anything but DeAndre’s Charles Barkley impression is on point!
