Across the Pond: Ella Henderson

As an admirer of British pop culture, ANDPOP’s Rebecca Mattina jumped at the opportunity to live in the United Kingdom for five months. While there, she’ll be writing about all the amazing things we’re missing out on from across the pond.

With a big voice like hers, it’s no wonder why Ella Henderson is one British talent to watch.

She first caught Britain’s eye back in 2011 when she waltzed her way into The X Factor. From the beginning, I, along with most viewers watching, knew Ella was something special. She was a force to be reckoned with ever since her audition.

Sadly the rising star left the show in sixth place, but she would ultimately follow in the footsteps of other defeated X-Factor contestants; Cher Lloyd (fourth place in 2010), and One Direction (third place in the same year as Cher).

I’m usually speechless when I listen to Ella sing. How can you not be? There’s nothing better than confident female performers with strong vocal chops. It’s like the Spice Girls said, “Girl Power!”

Ella took a short break from the spotlight but is now ready to get back into the game.

The now 18-year-old singer has released a few new tracks off of her debut album, out later this year.

She gave fans their first taste of new material back in October with “Five Tattoos.” It’s an Adele-inspired sound that perfectly showcases her incredible vocals and soulful melodies.  I still get goosebumps whenever I listen to it.

The X-Factor’s Simon Cowell, who signed Ella right after she left the show, has even given Ella’s debut album his seal of approval.

“He’s really happy with it which is amazing,” she told the Daily Spy. “The worst thing would be if someone turned around and hated it. He’s really chuffed with it.”

On top of what could be argued as one of the best voices to come out of the U.K., Ella has a genuine personality and seems to have a good head on her shoulders. We should just sit, listen, and let her exceptional voice serenade us.

The album is only the beginning. She’s quickly rising through the ranks on this side of the pond, and this is your chance to get on board. Let’s just hope a trip to Canada is on her to-do list.
