What does it take to make a large crowd of friendly Canadians unhappy? Apparently, Justin Bieber.

The international pop star won the Fan Choice Award at the JUNO Awards Sunday night. Despite the fact that Justin wasn’t even present at the show (he was in Montreal), the honour was met with loud boos as Canada’s Olympic gold medal curling team accepted the award on the singer’s behalf.

The award is Justin’s fourth JUNO Fan Choice award. While his recent legal troubles may not have put him in the good graces of the audiences, the “All That Matters” singer did have some support at the show. The evening’s host, Canadian singer Serena Ryder, rushed to the 20-year-old’s defence.

“I really think that Justin Bieber is an amazing musician and he deserved every bit of that award because he’s been working his ass off his entire life and we need to support how awesome he is,” she said.

Justin did thank his fans  Twitter later that night.

Justin wasn’t the only star absent at the Canadian music awards. Toronto rapper Drake, Montreal indie rockers Arcade Fire, Vancouver crooner Michael Bublé and half-American Robin Thicke were all no-shows.
