Sofia Coppola To Direct “Little Mermaid” Remake

You might have heard rumours that there’s a live action adaptation of Disney’s beloved classic The Little Mermaid in the makes, but now it’s been confirmed and Sofia Coppola has been signed on to direct!

You’ll remember Sofia Coppola for her edgy movies like The Virgin Suicides, Lost In Translation, Marie Antoinette and most recently, The Bling Ring. She’s got a knack for perfectly capturing the angst and agony of being a young woman, so we couldn’t think of a better person to direct the story of an unhappy mermaid in love with a human.

The Little Mermaid has been in the works since 2011 with a number of writers and directors joining in and dropping out due to other commitments, but it looks like Coppola and screenwriter Caroline Thompson (famous for her collaborations with Tim Burton) seem to be cemented to the project.

What’s most interesting is that this remake will be following Hans Christen Anderson’s original tragic ending in which the little mermaid ends up taking her own life. That means the movie is bound to be a little darker than the Disney cartoon we’ve come to love, but we still can’t wait to see how this comes out.
