In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, we’ve compiled a list of the top ten movie couples of all-time. Whether you’re single or with someone, there’s nothing like indulging in a little love that can only be found in the movies.
10. Peeta Mellark and Katniss Everdeen – The Hunger Games Series
Though most of our list is comprised of couples from the nineties and early aughts, our favourite modern couple has to be Katniss and Peeta. Like most great love stories, Josh Hutcherson’s character Peeta does everything he can, including willing to die, for the girl he loves. It even goes against the grain as Katniss (played by Jennifer Lawrence) is the one who does the fighting and the hunting and won’t open her heart to love.
9. Steve Edison and Mary Fiore – The Wedding Planner
There’s nothing quite like the love of falling for someone who’s already engaged. We can’t blame Mary (Jennifer Lopez) for falling for the cute doctor Steve (Matthew McConaughey) and thankfully he realizes he loves her back. This is the most Valentine-y of Valentine’s Day movies you could ever think of.
8. Rick Blaine and Ilsa Lund – Casablanca
We can’t neglect the classics and with Casablanca‘s love story having been alluded to in many films and TV shows since it was first release in 1942, we had to put it on our list. If there was such a thing as OTPs in the forties, Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman’s characters would have been ours.
7. Landon Carter and Jamie Sullivan – A Walk to Remember
Up next, a Nicholas Sparks based movie. A common early 2000s theme for shows was: popular-boy-falls-in-love-with-outcast-girl-but-doesn’t-want-to -admit-it which is the love story between these characters played by Shane West and Many Moore respectively. What makes this couple so special is that aside from love, they teach each other about having faith in life and in oneself.
6. Ike Graham and Maggie Carpenter – Runaway Bride
I don’t know if I love it because we get to see the man who finally gets Maggie to walk down the aisle for or if it’s because of the amazing movie couple that is Richard Gere and Julia Roberts (Pretty Woman anyone?). Whatever the case may be, they rank at number six on our list.
5. Noah and Allie – The Notebook
Everyone’s favourite romanic movie, The Notebook (based on Nicholas Sparks’s book of the same title) shows of a love that lasts a lifetime. With the raw feelings of love, passion and anger that Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams’s characters have for each other, there was no way they wouldn’t make our top five.
4. Harry Burns and Sally Albright – When Harry Met Sally…
Can a man and a woman be just friends? That’s the big question posed in this movie as Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) have a longtime friendship that develops over time but struggle to find love. That is until they realize they’ve had it all along — with each other.
3. Johnny Castle and Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman – Dirty Dancing
Like any good teen movie, a girl goes on summer vacation with her family and falls in love with one of the instructors at the resort. What makes Patrick Swazye and Jennifer Grey’s on-screen love story so special is that it’s fuelled by the power and sensuality of dance.
2. Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsen- Grease
This 1970s classic couple proved the first rule of love: never change yourself for someone else. They both dressed to impress the other thinking that’s what it would take to be together. Turns out, love prevails and they would have been together regardless of which clique they were part of. Plus John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John sure make a cute on-screen couple.
1. Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater – Titanic
The obvious and cliche love story of Jack and Rose is our number one movie couple. The chemistry between Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet is beautiful. And who doesn’t love a guy who sacrifices himself for his true love?
Tell us, who is your favourite couple from a movie?
