It’s aca-awesome news for fans of Pitch Perfect. Elizabeth Banks (a.k.a. The Hunger Games’ Effie Trinket) has been slated to direct Pitch Perfect 2, her first directorial effort.

Banks produced the original 2012 a cappella musical comedy with her husband (Max Handelman) and was instrumental in the entire process of the film. “She brings an enormous amount of energy and experience to everything she works on and we’re thrilled that she is making her feature directorial debut on Pitch Perfect 2,” Donna Langley, the chairperson of Universal Pictures, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Pitch Perfect stars Skylar Austin and Anna Camp congratulated Banks over Twitter on Tuesday:

Banks even had a role in the first movie as Gail, one of the a cappella competition hosts.

Writers Kay Cannon and Mickey Rapkin (the author of Pitch Perfect, the book the movie is based on) will again be working alongside Banks on Pitch Perfect 2.

Rumours are swirling that Anna Kendrick and Rebel WIlson are likely to return as leads in Pitch Perfect 2. It’s also rumoured that Brittany Snow, Camp and Astin will also reprise their roles in the sequel. There’s also the possibility that singer-actress Demi Lovato will join the cast, according to IMDb.

The original Pitch Perfect follows Beca (Kendrick) during her freshman year at Barden University — a school that prides itself on its award-winning a cappella groups. Beca joins The Bellas and competes with other a cappella groups, including their all male rivals, Treblemakers.

Pitch Perfect 2 is expected to hit theatres next year.
