Pharrell William’s Giant Hat Was Grammy Night’s Best Meme

Pharrell at the Grammy's with his RCMP look: brown hat and red jacket

When it comes to fashion, Pharrell Williams is the rare sort of man who can make something as kooky as a tartan wedding suit or simple as a clean tee and jeans look good. Like really good.

But, like all things, we have a limit on just how much kooky appeal we can take. His outfit at Sunday night’s Grammy awards toes this line. No, we weren’t in shock of his decidedly dressed down Adidas track jacket (which is so hip hop). It was the hat that did it. His amazingly huge mountie/Smokey the Bear-like hat.

Funny enough, it turns out Pharrell’s hat is more cultured than us filthy swines thanks to its fashion connections. Like the Adidas track jacket (Run DMC, anyone?), his hat is yet another hip hop reference, this time to the early eighties hip hop track, “Buffalo Gals” by Malcolm McLaren & the World’s Famous Supreme Team. They even wore the music video. On top of that, the hats in both the video and on top of Pharrell’s head was designed by Vivienne Westwood, the British designer who helped shape punk music’s signature look, according to The Cut. (Side note: Pharrell’s isn’t one of the original models; he bought his new a couple of years ago.)

See? Musical references galore! But that didn’t stop us from having fun with Pharrell’s now infamous hat. Just check out all the memes that surfaced during the three-hour award show:

A PSA from those in uniform

Yes Sir, Mr. Williams!

And the Canadian RCMP jokes are the best.

What if the RCMP uniforms were redesigned to look like Pharrell’s outfit? Lookin’ good boys.

We all remember Heritage Moments but who knew this was part of Canada’s history?!

But it wouldn’t be an internet meme without some comparisons to pop culture. Who wore it best: Pharrell, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, or Spongebob?

Double take. Was that Woody or Pharrell?

Hey Pharrell, Arby’s called, they want their hat back

But if these memes aren’t enough for you, you can always follow Pharrell’s Hat on twitter for all your ‘RCMP meets Hollywood’ needs!

I mean, who can resists tweets like this:

We’ll meet you there!
A+ for creativity and humour interweb. What do you make of this interesting fashion choice?
