The start of 2014 is tinged with a bit of sadness after news of actor James Avery’s passing broke. The 65-year-old actor died as a result of complications from open-heart surgery Tuesday night.

To many of us, Avery was not just any TV dad. He was Uncle Phil who, for six seasons, was the butt of Will Smith’s many jokes but was also his saving grace on NBC’s The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air. In fact, many of our favourite scenes of the series involved Uncle Phil. Avery and Smith just had this undeniable chemistry that transformed Uncle Phil from Will’s stern relative-by-marriage uncle that he would occasionally make fun of to Will’s caring father-figure whom he wholeheartedly respected.

Arguably, neither Fresh Prince the show or Will Smith the actor would’ve become what they are today without Avery’s outstanding support. With that in mind, here are 10 videos that help you say goodbye to one of television’s best television dads.
