Mother Nature has decided that winter should begin this week, so here are a few songs to keep you warm while clinging to the final precious days where the temperatures hovers above zero degrees (celsius, that is).
“Do What U Want” by Lady Gaga ft. R. Kelly
This may be my favourite Lady Gaga song ever. It’s fun and hella catchy. It’s a pretty different sound for Gaga but it works, and she comes off as strong and sexy. I look forward to hearing this on the radio no more than 200 times a day.
“Hold On Tight” by Justin Bieber
The latest in Bieber’s #MusicMonday series, “Hold On Tight,” continues Justin’s transformation from teen boy with a crush to… an older teen boy, but one who has learned a few things about love a long the way. I am really enjoying the dark turn that Bieber’s music is taking (possibly because they are good songs, but also possibly because I am a bitter cynic), and hope that these sultry R&B influences are a major factor on his next album.
“Girls” by The 1975
I love this video because The 1975 poke fun at both modern pop videos and at themselves. The video begins with the band saying that the set feels too much like a pop video, and that’s not what they’re about and that the video must be shot in black and white. Once the music comes in, the video becomes bright and colourful and indulges in all the cliches of the modern music videos (almost naked girls à la “Blurred Lines” and strange imagery like “We Can’t Stop” to name a few). It doesn’t hurt that the song is also great; I like that the 1975 can hide heavier lyrics in melodies that make you want to dance (“I know you’re looking for salvation in a secular age, but girl, I’m not your saviour”). They’re like a soft-grunge version of One Direction.
“Roar” by Katy Perry
I think this video is adorable even though it looks like it was shot in a Rainforest Café. Katy’s hunky explorer friend gets eaten by a tiger and she has to learn how to stay alive in and make her own way in her new jungle home, all while defeating a tiger for the title of queen of the jungle. Think Tarzan, but with a cuter wardrobe. This song is one of my favourites for belting out loud in the shower (only to be hit with the realization that you are a terrible singer).
