Despite having Tina Fey as the host, Saturday Night Live‘s season premiere was rather lacklustre. I’m just going to peg it on the fact the show has just signed on six new cast members and didn’t fail to remind us of it. “New cast member or arcade Fire?” Really?
There was at least one shining light in a rather dimly lit tunnel: this parody of HBO’s wildly popular Girls. As someone who continues to hate watch Lena Dunham’s brain child, I thought the SNL cast hit all the show’s annoying flaws and quirks and it wasn’t only Fey’s Albanian refugee character Blerta that did it. New cast member Noël Wells’ impression of Dunham was perfect if not eerie. The same could also be said for everyone else who had a hand in this spoof. It was utter perfection.
If the girls of SNL can continue to do this well during the rest of the season, I’m sure no one would mind the absence of Bill Hader, Jason Sudeikis and Fred Armisen.
I’d rather like to see the girls take back the show. It would make for a hilarious ride.
