The school year is officially in full swing and ANDPOP is here to help ease the pain. Here are a few songs that will make the tradition out of summer mode a little less painful.
“All Night” by Icona Pop
This upbeat song from the Swedish duo’s second album is just what you need to get you through the day’s hardest task…getting out of your warm bed in the morning. Sure, the rest of your room feels like the arctic tundra and you barely got enough sleep, but an upbeat track is all you need to get into a positive mood for the long day ahead.
“Lovers In The Parking Lot” by Solange
I am all about Solange Knowles right now. There’s something about her self-empowered attitude (and amazing afro) that just speaks to something deep inside me. What’s also great about her is that she is a bonafide pop star without sounding like every other R&B act that is on the radio right now. This song, and the video, that accompanies it really showcases all that Solange has to offer: amazing vocals, introspective lyrics and, in the case of the video, cool dance numbers.
“Pretty” by The Weeknd
Toronto is on full display in this video. In fact, when Abel sings, “and you can never feel this pretty,” it seems like he is talking to the city and playing to our self-deprecating nature. We appreciate what he and former label mate Drake have done for our city and he knows it (but I may just be reading too much into these lyrics…). The Toronto skyline is featured heavily as The Weeknd is driven through the city on his way to shoot a girl and guy that she is sleeping with. Great video, great song. Has the usual laid-back vibe mixed with dark lyrics that will keep you relaxed throughout the week.
“Growl” by EXO
I’ve recently been turned on to the uber popular Korean-Chinese boyband EXO. As a fan of everything boy-band it wasn’t hard for me to get on board and it was even less hard after I saw this video. It’s so hard to resist pop music when it’s done well, and these guys have it all: great voices, amazing choreography (that they can all do wonderfully), and good looks — seriously, just try to pick a favourite out of the 12. And while you do that, I’ll be over here trying to learn these dance moves…
