Let’s be honest: for the last couple of years, the VMAs have been pretty dull — up until now. Last night’s was chockfull of moments that made us squeal like we were back in 1998, face palm and scratch our heads out of confusion. These are the five moments that we’ll always remember.
‘N Sync’s “Bye Bye Bye” performance
After a week of rumours, it finally happened: ‘N Sync reunited for one amazing performance. Chris Kirkpatrick, Joey Fatone, Lance Bass and JC Chasez joined Justin Timberlake on stage after he performed a medley of his own hits to sing “Girlfriend” and “Bye Bye Bye.” *Insert rabid 1990s fangirl squeals here* It was the first time the band has been on stage together in 10 years. While the performance was flawless, there was a small mishap near the end as Chis Kirkpatrick’s exit didn’t pan out and had to leave by jumping through a hole in the stage.
Miley Cyrus twerking and grinding against Robin Thicke
Miley Cyrus’ Britney Spears with a Python moment was the talk of the night, even overshadowing ‘N Sync’s brief onstage reunion (it was the briefest of moments that we will never forget). With her Gwen Stefani’s hair buns, she confused everyone by dancing amongst giant teddy bears, rubbing a foam finger against her body and then proceeding to twerk all over Robin Thicke…
The Smith family’s collective reaction to Miley Cyrus twerking
… but it also did provide us the best reaction shot of the whole night: Will, Jaden and Willow Smith’s utterly confused faces.
Taylor Swift’s reaction shot when One Direction went up on stage
The crowd at the Barclay Center wasn’t so welcoming when it came to One Direction (they got booed) but no one was as unimpressed as Taylor Swift, a.k.a. Harry Style’s ex, was. It looks like the country star turned to her friend Selena Gomez and said, “Shut the f–k up” when Harry and company appeared on stage. It happened months ago, Taylor! … But when can we finally hear that Harry Styles song we know you’ve been penning? We’ve been patiently waiting…
Whatever Lady Gaga Wore or Didn’t Wear
While Miley Cyrus’ latex get up was pretty skimpy, it wasn’t as revealing as Lady Gaga’s number. Gaga went through a number of costume changes throughout her VMA performance going from wearing a white square head thing to almost nothing.Weirdly enough, it wasn’t the most jaw-dropping award show costume she’s worn because what could ever top that meat dress?
