Who else is excited about the VMA’s this weekend? It’s probably one of the most anticipated music awards shows every year, just because we know it’s never a dull moment. From “Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time!” to Britney and Madonna’s kiss, (and then panning to Justin Timberlake after, classic!) we always seem to get these moments every year.
To celebrate the awards, I have created a chart plotting where the past ten awards have fallen on the memorable scale. Take a look below!
The 2002 awards had a lot of things that made it a bit memorable. From Pink’s “I’m too drunk for this” acceptance speech, to Michael Jackson awkwardly thinking he got the Artist of the Millennium award, there were many highlights of this show. Other moments include Sammy Hagar basically telling the world that David Lee Roth needs money, Christina Aguilera presenting Best Male Video to Eminem to a song that dissed her, and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog picking a fight with Eminem. (That part got cut out for the replays!)
The 2003 awards celebrated the 20th anniversary of MTV. However, this award show had it’s own memorable moments to celebrate, mainly the Britney/Madonna and the Madonna/Christina kiss. The icing on the cake about this performance was that the producers panned to Justin Timberlake to capture his reaction. (This was after they broke up)
The ’04 awards was kind of a let down after the past two awards show. This was the first year that there was no host – which might have contributed to why it was almost yawn-worthy. The only thing that was a bit memorable was when Dave Chappelle presented Jay-Z with a gold watch because he just announced his “retirement”. Okay, Jay-Z.
The following year was slightly better, only because it featured possibly one of the weirdest performances we’ve seen. R Kelly had a one-man show when he performed his R&B opera Trapped in The Closet. Let’s just leave it at that.
Then comes the 2006 awards. There were no memorable moments. The only thing that might have saved the show was how hilarious Jack Black was.
The 2007 awards only had some of its moments too. The highlight of that year was Britney Spears’ awkward performance of Gimmie More, leaving viewers to question what performance they just saw. Keep in mind, this is the same year she had her famous meltdown.
The following year was memorable due it’s performances and the speeches. After last year’s awkward performance, Britney redeemed herself and won three awards, including the most coveted Video of the Year award. It was just a year full of crazy moments and entrances.
Who can forget the 2009 awards? If you do not know about the Taylor Swift and Kanye West incident, well, I’m just going to assume you live under a rock. Kanye West interrupted Taylor’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video by saying his famous line, “I’m really happy for you, I’m gonna let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time”. This award show also included Lady Gaga’s memorable performance of Paparazzi.
The 2010 awards can be easily called “Lady Gaga’s year”. The Mother Monster took home 8 awards, including video of the year. Who can forget her accepting the award in a meat dress? As well, the most talked about performance of that night went to Taylor Swift and Kanye West who settled their spat through a song. How awesome!
The next year, like the rest had amazing performances. One of the highlights of the night was when Beyonce had announced her pregnancy to the world during her performance. The look on everyone’s faces – especially Kanye – was priceless!
Last year’s award show was full of terrific performances. Kevin Hart as a host was probably one of the best ideas, as he kept the crowd laughing and wanting more. Who can forget all of the performances from Demi Lovato, One Direction and Rihanna? We know we didn’t!
As the VMAs approach, we can’t help to feel excited about what this year will bring us. (We’re crossing our fingers on an NSYNC reunion!) What was your favourite moment of the past 10 years?
