September usually marks the end of summer and the beginning of a new school year. But for those living in the world of fashion, it also means the start of Fashion Week and September issues!
What’s the September Issue you ask? The September Issue is the biggest and most important issue of the year for fashion magazines. They mark the start of a new year for the magazine world. They generally rake in the most ad dollars, making them the heaviest issue of the year.
With so much money at stake, magazines try to find the best cover stars to entice readers to buy their September issue right off the newsstand. It’s generally a big deal for celebrities to land a September cover since it means editors believe you’re bankable. Even though September is still a couple months away, now the cover stars for the various September issues have already been chosen and photographed. According to WWD, here are who we should be expecting to see grace those highly coveted September issues.
Jennifer Lawrence for Vogue
Oscar winner and everybody’s imaginary BFF, Jennifer Lawrence, will land her first American Vogue cover as shot by famed photographer Mario Testino (who also shot the infamous Sienna Miller 2007 U.S. Vogue September cover). Hopefully Anna Wintour won’t tear J.Law’s cover to shreds like she did Miller’s in documentary The September Issue.
Kate Upton for Elle
Many people underestimated Kate Upton as she first rose to fame by modelling primarily for men’s magazines and was most famously the Sports Illustrated’s swimwear cover star. It’s hard to transition from men’s magazines to high fashion, but Upton has proven naysayers wrong. Not only has her fourth Vogue cover just been released, but it’s a coup for any model to beat out an actress/singer for a magazine cover—let alone a September cover. Now that she has conquered Vogue, it’s Elle’s turn.
Jennifer Aniston for Glamour
Jennifer Aniston is a magazine cover star MVP. Stick her on the cover of a magazine and it will become one of the year’s bestselling issues. That’s why you see her on so many magazine covers even when she doesn’t have a movie to promote. So even though you can say Aniston is a very safe choice for a September cover, it would be a nice break seeing her on a cover of a fashion magazine as opposed to a tabloid.
Zooey Deschanel for Marie Claire
September also means a new T.V. season so it makes sense to stick the star of one of the biggest T.V. shows on the cover in hopes fans will buy it. The popular New Girl star Deschanel had the second-bestselling issue of Marie Claire in 2012, so here’s hoping she’ll nab the number 1 spot for 2013.
Blake Lively for Lucky
This will be the first fall T.V. season since ‘Gossip Girl’ went off the air. So if you are in need of a serious Serena van der Woodsen fix then Lucky magazine is hoping you’ll buy their September issue.
Nina Dobrev for Cosmopolitan
The star of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ posted this backstage shot of her getting beautified for her Cosmopolitan cover photoshoot back in May. Here is Dobrev with makeup artist Kristofer Buckle and her hairstylist.
Lily Collins for Seventeen
Lily Collins returns to the cover of Seventeen Magazine just in time for her highly anticipated new movie series The Mortal Instruments: The City of Bones.
One Direction for Teen Vogue
The boys of One Direction were Teen Vogue’s bestselling covers for 2012. Obviously you have to take into account that each member got an individual cover and it said ‘Collect all 5 covers!’ on the front, so that clearly boosted sale figures. Although not reported in the WWD article, it is rumoured that the band will just have one cover this time but the magazine will still hope that the band proves to be a bestseller.
Cara Delevingne for W
Now this is another non-WWD reported cover star rumour. But with the year Delevingne is having and the number of magazine covers under her belt already, it should be safe to say you’ll see this Brit on the cover of a September issue. It would actually be a shocker not seeing her face this September! Hope it doesn’t come to that!
