The 1990s was a great decade for music, and also one of the craziest. Woodstock in the 90s was probably the most dangerous it has ever been: riots, naked people, fires it was all there. Lets remember the time when rock (grunge or otherwise) reigned, and some of the best bands to ever play.
Here’s my list of the best rock bands from the 1990s:
This band was one of the youngest in the 90s. Daniel Johns, the lead singer and guitarist was only 14 when they took off with their huge hit, “Israel’s Son.” His voice is so great and true to rock, you would’ve never known he was so young. He didn’t sound like Justin Bieber… Take a listen for yourself.
Formally known as Bush-X, this British rock band invaded the Western World in the early 90s. I still have the tape somewhere in my room with “Swallowed” on it, which was my favorite song at one time. While most kids these days know lead singer Gavin Rossdale as Gwen Stefani’s husband, he used to be cool once too back in the day. If Bush ever went back on tour and I would be there, sitting front row.
Some would argue they should be number one on my list, but they were really big in the 80’s when they first showed up on the scene. They continued their popularity well into the 90’s, but it was a softer rock. Not quite as metal as their Ride the Lightening album. “Enter Sandman” will probably always be their biggest hit, and it came out in 1991. The video takes me right back to having nightmares as a kid, which was the worst! Enjoy.
7. Stone Temple Pilots
Stone Temple Pilots are probably the most ’90s’ band ever. With the sunflowers, hair, clothes they have ever typical 90s style. Unfortunately, the band was plagued with lead singer Scott Weiland’s personal drama. His substance abuse and arrests have driven the band to break up or go on hiatus more than once over the years.
6. Red Hot Chili Peppers!
This band is still around today making great music. Formed in 1983, the band really took off in the 90s. Their biggest hit I still think of is their 1991 hit, “Give It Away.” “Under the Bridge” was another great one and the list can go on and on for this band.
5. Alice in Chains!
This band is the definition of grunge. They have a creepy vibe that’s added to every song, which just makes it so much better. Like most 90s bands, they were also hindered by substance abuse problems and lead singer Layne Staley died in 2002 from a lethal injection of heroin and cocaine at the age 34.
4. Pearl Jam!
This 90s band reached fame in 1991 with the release of their album Ten. Every song on this album is good. You can actually listen to it straight through without skipping a song. How many albums nowadays are like that? While they’re still making music today, it’ll be difficult to compete with their 90’s sound. “Alive” and “Even Flow” are their most well known hits.
Although they formed in 1984, the band had true success in the 90s. The band is actually still touring and sounds the same, if not better. You might also recognize the lead singer Chris Cornell’s voice from other bands such as Audioslave. Needless to say, he’s one of the best singers of all time.
Obviously the best grunge band of all time has to be on this list. Their music will live on forever with songs like “Smells Like Teen Spirit” which has become a teen anthem. Lead singer Kurt Cobain died in 1994 at age 27, joining the likes of Jimi Hendrix in the infamous 27 Club. One thing Nirvana was known for was smashing their instruments.
1. Rage Against the Machine!
Now a lot of people will think Nirvana should be number one, but I don’t. Rage was an iconic band who’s lyrics and message are still relevant and educate people around the world. Known for their political messages and true stories of struggle, they encouraged fans to riot at their shows. People just really believed in the message and the culture that is Rage. Tom Morello, the guitarist, is known for creating sounds with his guitar like no one else. Their sound and message set them apart, and that’s why they are in the number one spot.
