If there’s anything we love more than a great movie it’s the obligatory sequel that follows. And in the coming months there will be loads of them! Here are 11 sequels that we’re excited to see this year.
Anchorman: The Legend Continues
Unprofessional and inappropriate — these are just a couple words that can be used to describe Ron Burgundy and his team at the Channel 4 nightly news. I think it’s fair to say we’ve been looking forward to an Anchorman sequel since it was released in 2004. Anchorman: The Legend Continues will bring back Will Ferrell, Steve Carrell, Paul Rudd, Christina Applegate and just announced to join the cast…Drum roll… is the hilarious Kristin Wiig. We have to wait until Dec. 20 for this one so ’til then, re-watch Ron personally announcing the sequels’ release on Conan (above).
Thor: The Dark World
Let’s be honest, when it comes to Thor you don’t have to be a Marvel Comics fan, am I right ladies? Australian hottie, Chris Hemsworth made his action hero debut when he donned his Thor costume and hammer in the first instalment, which became a huge blockbuster and career starter for him. In The Dark World, Thor sets out to battle a dark race of elves being led by Malekith, who is threatening to plunge the universe into darkness following what happened in The Avengers. The Dark World is set for a Nov. 8 release, but above is a little teaser from Marvel.
Superman: Man of Steel
Seeing as the first Superman was a fail (to say the least), I’ve got high expectations for this one. While it’s not necessarily connected to the first film, it is a sequel to the story. We all know the story of Clark Kent and his alter ego Superman; how he landed on earth from the planet of Krypton. In Man of Steel, it’s all about Clark’s upbringing and evolution to Superman. I’m really excited for this one, in theatres June 14, and hope it will be a lot better than the first. If not, we can just ogle at the image of Henry Cavil in tights, right?
Grown Ups 2
Adam Sandler, Kevin James and Chris Rock will be reuniting in Grown Ups 2 (sadly no Rob Schneider in this one). Lenny, played by Adam Sandler, decides to move his family back to his hometown and along with his childhood buddies, they all learn a lesson from their kids along the way. You can also look forward to seeing other Saturday Night Live alumni Andy Samberg, Bobby Moynihan and Will Forte, all playing male cheerleaders… Yes you did read that correctly.
The Hangover Part 3
After The Hangover 2 was released with mixed reviews from viewers,Todd Philips decided to go ahead and complete the trilogy anyway with the wolf pack now heading to Tijuana. But don’t look for a bachelor party, this one will follow Stu, Phil, Doug and Alan on a good old fashion road trip. The second may not have been a winner but I’m looking forward to seeing how they’re going to end this trilogy when it comes out on May 24. And Bradley Cooper is in it so there’s always a silver lining.
Kick Ass 2: Balls to the Walls
The only thing that makes the second Kick-Ass even more awesome, aside from Jim Carrey being in it, is the fact that parts of it were filmed in Toronto. In Balls to the Walls, Dave aka “Kick-Ass,” sets out to create a team of superheroes to combat crime. Think Avengers but with high school students. Aaron Johnson and “McLovin” himself, Christopher Mintz-Plasse are back to reprise their roles in the sequel, set for a June 26 release.
Iron Man 3
In Iron Man 3, Tony Stark finds his life being destroyed by his nemesis Mandarin, and promises to set out and destroy him. John Favreau isn’t returning as director of the third installment, but will be in it playing Happy Hogan. The first two movies of Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Iron Man proved golden at the box office and I doubt the third will be any different when it comes out May 3.
Before we get into talking about The Wolverine which comes out July 26, let’s just take a moment to marvel at this photo of Hugh Jackman…
Okay, now on to the film. Following the events of X-Men:The Last Stand, the sixth installment of the series, out July 26, is all about Wolverine. After traveling to Japan, Logan finds himself caught in a fight with someone from his past. While there, he begins training with a Samurai warrior.
Star Trek Into Darkness
“Live long and prosper” all you Trekkies because on May 17 you can see Spok and Captain Kirk on the big screen once again. After discovering a threat within their own organization, Captain Kirk (Chris Pine), sets out on a mission to find and capture a “one man weapon of mass destruction.”
G.I Joe Retaliation
This has been quite the year for Channing Tatum, not only was he named “sexiest man alive” but he’s also a part of the highly anticipated action film, G.I. Joe Retaliation, alongside The Rock and Bruce Willis. In this sequel, out March 28, the team finds themselves at war with not only Cobra but also with threats coming from within the government that have the potential of compromising the entire G.I. Joe team.
The Fast and the Furious 6
Who would have thought the whole Fast and The Furious franchise would be on its sixth film? After the first one was released in 2001 it became a major hit with car and movie buffs. Now, I’m excited for this one since they brought back favourites from the first and second film. Dominic and Brian and the gang are enlisted to help agent Hobbs, played by The Rock, take down a rival gang in exchange for their records to be cleared. It has always been one of my favourites, including the last one. They’re action packed and always offer great background stories. With the originals back together it should prove to be another hit at the box office on May 24.
