Five Best Dressed: a courtside Jay-Z & Beyoncé, a vamp Lily Collins, and two stylish Mommas

Jay-Z and Beyoncé

What they’re wearing: Jay-Z and Beyoncé were spotted courtside at the New York Knicks at Brooklyn Nets game. Hova repping the Nets in a grey snapback and grey crewneck sweatshirt, camp pants, and Air Jordan sneakers. Queen Bey wore a Stella McCartney embroidered top, black leather leggings, with blue suede shoes.

Why we love it: Let’s take a second to come to terms with the fact that neither one of us are Jay-Z or Beyoncé.

OK now that we’ve moved on let’s just appreciate the couple’s courtside style. Jay-Z is on trend in his camo pants and subtly yet stylishly shows support to the Brooklyn Nets in his sweater and cap. Beyoncé subtly pops with colours with the multicoloured monogrammed appliqués on her top and her blue pumps. The couple both sport chunky chain necklaces.

Takeaway: Showing off logos is a lazy way to try to be stylish, so do it subtly so as to not take all the attention away from your outfit. Yeah you might have paid tons of money for that designer item, but you don’t have to be a showoff about it. Just because you dropped a tons of bill on your outfit doesn’t mean you still can’t look cheap.

Lily Collins

What she’s wearing: The lead in the upcoming The Mortal Instrument series stepped out in a black Mulberry column dress at the 2012 British Fashion Awards.

Why we love it: Collins vamps it up this dark and moody look. The column dress elongates the petite actress and has subtle striped details adding a cool design detail to the gown. Collins is on trend with her dark lipstick and adds a cool accessory with her gold chain earring.

Takeaway: Dark lips are on trend but it can be tricky to find the right colour for you. Stay away from black unless you’re going for that emo look, opt for a dark colour that’s near black so as to still have that hint of colour.

Miranda Kerr

What she’s wearing: Kerr was snapped out in N.Y.C. with her son Flynn wearing a black quilted leather Balenciaga jacket, a green knitted Acne sweater, and a black skirt.

Why we love it: The Australian model has proven the streets of New York City are her actual fashion runways since she has caught our attention not once but twice now while strutting her stuff on them. Kerr mixes textiles well in her leather biker jacket and knit sweater, making the look a mix of tough and sweet. Showing off some leg reminds us this momma’s still got it. Kerr also accessorizes well with her green Christian Laboutin bag, her Tabitha Simmons boots, and cool shades. And “awwww” points for toddler Flynn.

Takeaway: Chunky knit sweaters are not only on-trend but totally practical for the chillier weather. However chunky sweaters tend to be shapeless so counterbalance that with tight pants or skirt, or don a slim fit jacket on top to lessen the sweater’s bulk.

Nicole Ritchie

What she’s wearing: Ritchie stepped out with her daughter Harlow in California wearing a menacing rottweiler Givenchy hoodie, a long black wool coat, black jeans, and black Converse sneakers.

Why we love it: The animal print sweater is a current trend (as in a picture of animal printed on the front and not the leopard, zebra, snake skin-type print) but most of the animals tend to be cartoony and cutesy. However Ritchie stands out with her snarling pooch on the front of her hoodie. Besides from the rottweiler this all black look still looks chic while comfy and casual. Also she gets points for wearing House of Harlow cat-eye sunglasses, a designer wearing her own designs is always the best form of advertising.

Takeaway: Graphic print sweatshirts have made a major comeback and can be quite tough to incorporate into a complete look. So keep the rest of the outfit simple so as to not distract others from the your graphic print.
