Victoria Abraham defines one up and coming artist each week so you can impress your friends with your musical brilliance. This week, she tackles Little Mix, a British girl group.

Although the four girls of Little Mix originally had solo aspirations, their formation into a girl group led to them winning the eighth season of UK’s The X-Factor. But don’t let their origins jade you: they’re not your average fabricated-for-pop-stardom-cutie-pie girl group. These girls can sing and they do it well. They’re set to release their debut album, DNA, on Nov. 19.

Origins: The United Kingdom

Band members: Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Jade Thirlwall

Known for: Little Mix are known for their X-Factor beginnings.

Used in a sentence: “These four ladies have the winning combination of cute, British, and talented.”

File next to: Girls Aloud

Download now: Their new track “DNA.”

Fun facts:

1. The girls auditioned for the show individually, but were combined into a group after each failed to make it past bootcamp’s first challenge.

2.The girls were then separated into two different groups during the Groups bootcamp challenge. After each group failed, Jesy, Perrie, Leigh-Anne, and Jade were combined to form the group Rhythmix.

3. One Direction’s Zayn Malik (who was on The X-Factor that same season) is dating Little Mix band member Perrie Edwards.

4. The girls changed their name to Little Mix after it was discovered that a Brighton children’s charity is called Rhythmix.

5. They became the first group to win in the show’s eight-year history.

Notable lyrics:

I’m not exactly clear what “life taught me to die” means, but the ladies do a good job of showcasing the strength of their voices in the song “Cannonball.”

There’s still a little bit of your taste in my mouth/There’s still a little bit of you laced with my doubt/It’s still a little hard to say what’s going on/There’s still a little bit of your ghost, your witness/There’s still a little bit of your face I haven’t kissed/You step a little closer each day/That I can’t say what’s going on/Stones taught me to fly/Love taught me to lie/Life taught me to die/So it’s not hard to fall/When you’ve flown like a cannonball
