If you thought Katy Perry was cute now, wait till you see pics and videos of the “Wide Awake” singer growing up. Her movie Katy Perry: Part of Me comes out on Blu-ray and DVD Sept. 18 (that’s tomorrow!) so we decided to celebrate with a retrospective look at her rise to fame. Get ready to say awww.
When Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson aka Katy Perry was born in 1984, she had those signature, doe-like eyes we’re obsessed with. She grew up in Santa Barbara, California with her parents, big sister Angela and little brother David.
Katy was always into the spotlight and started doing kiddie beauty pageants in grade school. “I still wear those same outfits… and still have my hair and makeup done like that,” she blogged in 2009.
See her as a gleek after the jump
Katy always listened to her sister’s gospel music tapes. She started singing anywhere she could, from coffee shops to her local choir. Here’s 15-year-old Katy (check out her short, blond bob) singing in her church choir in 1999.
As hot as her signature dark locks are today, Katy looked beautiful as a blonde on the cover of her first album (self-titled) in 2001. Even though it didn’t make a huge splash, it was a big step for the 16-year-old on the road to superstardom.
Katy rocked her guitar, a new punky hairdo and nose piercing at 17 for a holiday concert on Trinity Broadcasting Network in 2001. Watch out for when she sings “looking for a way to make a mark on my own.” Don’t worry Katy, you’ll find it soon!
Who wouldn’t want to explore the streets of Tokyo in their music video? That’s just what Katy did at 20 for her track “Simple” in 2004. The song also made it on the soundtrack for The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants.
Once Katy dropped “I Kissed a Girl” in 2008, the red carpet became her second home. Now 28, the stunning singer looked better than ever at the MTV VMAs on Sept. 6. After all those years of working the stage, she definitely deserves some award show love.
