Carly Rae Jepsen
What she’s wearing: The Canadian popstar performed on The Today Show wearing a coral Kelly Wearstler dress paired with printed Alice + Olivia “Juliet” wedges, an ASOS necklace, and a white studded belt.
Why we love it: Coral is on trend as the summer colour for lips, so Jepsen took it a step further by wearing it in a bright summer dress. The watercolour-type pattern creates a cool graphic design and is accented well with her silver accessories.
Takeaway: Monochromatic looks are on trend but make sure to use a different colour for your accessories so things aren’t too matchy matchy.
What they’re wearing: The UK boy band performed at the John F. Kennedy airport in NYC for the JetBlue Live From T5 Concert series, wearing graphic tees, jeans, a sport coat, chambray, and more.
Why we love it: Well it’s more that we like four out of five of the looks and excluding Jay would just seem too cruel. Siva, in the grey sport coat, looks the most put-together with his slightly monochromatic look. His T-shirt has a hint of navy, which gives a subtle pop of colour. Tom and Nathan rock the cool graphic tees, but I give the edge to Nathan since his mustached monocle print is more fun and his khakis set him apart from the rest of the group. Max wears a light blue short-sleeve button-down in chambray (a light woven fabric resembling denim) — a fabric that has made a major comeback. And Jay, well he’s wearing a novelty tee that can be either seen as vulgar or hilarious, nothing fashionable about it. However since Jay is known for his sense of humor he can get away with it, but he does bring down the group’s fashion average. Sorry!
Takeway: When choosing graphic tees try choosing a graphic that suits your personality because they’ll send a message to others about you. Try staying away from novelty tees because they may seem funny at first sight but the joke usually is over by the second glance, then you’ll be the joke instead of your shirt.
What she’s wearing: The Bachelorette star wore a Stella McCartney Fall 2012 dress on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, on Friday.
Why we love it: Because it’s a sign that fall is here! Kay, summer is awesome and all, but fall is a major season for fashion so you should stop complaining about going back to school and get on board the fashion awesomeness! This dress is an ingenious example of colour-blocking using fall colours and tweed fabrics. The black and light brown panelling along the sides create that coveted hour-glass silhouette illusion.
Takeaway: Mixing fabrics is one of the most fun things about fall, but since fall fabrics tend to be heavier, try mixing in some lighter fabrics to keep things balanced. Just like grounding a bold print or colour with a neutral, lighten up heavy fabrics with something soft or sheer.
What she’s wearing: The Hunger Games star appeared at a taping for Extra in a sleeveless graphic floral top and loose high-waisted shorts, accessorized with a yellow belt and golden studded flats.
Why we love it: Stenberg is wearing separates but creates an illusion of a fun floral romper, an adorable look for the young pint-sized actress. The graphic floral top is sweet but modern and the studded shoes make the look edgy.
Takeaway: Rompers have come back and are no longer reserved for the toddler set. Make sure to add some more grown-up touches like a modern print or metallic accessories to keep the look from going pre-school.
What she’s wearing: Cyrus wore a black scoop-neck tee, a camouflage jacket tied around her denim cut-off shorts, and black DM x Agyness Deyn Dr. Martens boots while shopping in NYC.
Why we love it: Say what you will about her new haircut, but Miley Cyrus has been rocking the 90s grunge wave to perfection. The core the look is nice and simple. But she adds a pop of colour with her gold chunky necklace and bracelets and a hint graphic print with her camo jacket (camo print is set to make a big comeback in the fall). Plus, tying the jacket around the waist was very 90s of her! She finishes her look with an great pair of Doc Martens boots, which hint at Cyrus’ possible style and hair inspiration — the ever so hip UK fashion model Agyness Deyn.
Takeaway: A bold new haircut can call for a bold new wardrobe, Cyrus has always hinted about her edgier side but her Hannah Montana-era hair and look kept her back from taking major fashion risks. A new haircut can do wonders and it’s also an excse to get new clothes!
