Posted on July 10, 2012 by

Victoria Abraham defines one up and coming artist each week so you can impress your friends with your musical brilliance. This week, she tackles Conor Maynard, a British pop singer from Brighton, England.

I swear I don’t have a thing for British music; it just so happens that a lot of musicians currently blowing up happen to be from Britain. Conor Maynard is no exception. Having recently won the MTV’s coveted Brand New For 2012 Award, Maynard is getting ready to release his debut album, Contrast at the end of July.

Known for: Conor Maynard is known for his catchy pop singles and a charismatic personality.

Used in a sentence: “Maynard’s boyish good looks and pop appeal are sure to convert scores of girls into “Mayniacs.”

Watch now: Watch the recently released video for “Vegas Girl”

File next to: Justin Bieber, Olly Murs

Fun facts: Like so many other artists, Maynard got his start on YouTube. He’s only 20 years old and like every young male pop musician with a popular single he has to fight off Justin Bieber comparisons.

2008: He uploaded his first cover song “Breathe” by Lee Carr to YouTube. It wasn’t until Ne-Yo saw Maynard’s cover of his song “Beautiful Monster” that he caught the attention of American labels.

2011: He was signed to EMI subsidiary Parlophone.

2012: The video for his debut single “Can’t Say NO” was released on March 1. Later, he released the single “Drowning for a free download, for anyone who preordered his album. His new single “Vegas Girl” will be released on July 22 and his debut album Contrast will be out on July 30.

Notable lyrics:

I’m not positive, but I THIINK the song “Can’t Say No” is about Conor liking girls.

Girls Girls Girls I just can’t say no/Never see them coming I just watch them go/Girls Girls Girls I just can’t say no/Never see them coming I just wa-wa-wa-wa-watch them go/Take control, making me sweat girl run that show/It’s them Girls Girls Girls I just can’t say no/Houston I think we got a problem
