Lady Gaga debuted a suicide-themed track in Melbourne this week called “Princess Die.” She made sure the clarify the correct spelling (not “Princess Di” though the pun gives the song a whole new layer.
“I wrote it a little while ago, and I’ve never ever played it for anyone,” she told her fans. “This song is a little sad. But it’s about some of the most deep and personal thoughts I’ve ever had. It’s called ‘Princess Die,’ D-I-E.”
On stage, Gaga said the song is about some of the darkest and most personal thoughts she’s ever had, and while it’s pretty morbid, she assured everyone that the rest of her album is upbeat.
The track has a slower tempo than we’re used to and goes through unhappy feelings that many people have experienced at least once in their life. “Leave the coffin open when I go/And leave my pearls and lipstick on so everybody knows/Pretty will be the photograph I leave/Laying down on famous knives so everybody sees,” Gaga sang. “I wish that I was strong/I wish that I was wrong/I wish that I could cope, but I took pills and left a note.”
