Our favourite celebrities are usually so glammed up in dramatic costumes and makeup that it’s hard to imagine what they looked like as dimple-cheeked kids. From their perspective, a home video surfacing on YouTube must be like when a proud parent pulls out an embarrassing photo of your first successful potty training lesson to scare your new date (wait, that doesn’t happen to everyone?).
Luckily, these videos aren’t that embarrassing. In fact, they’re pretty adorable.
Without the heavy liquid eyeliner, Kreayshawn is barely recognizable. She posted this video on YouTube a couple days ago with the comment: “I decided to put some old footage of me up so you guys can see a little of how I grew up and some things that inspired me to be who I am today. It is pretty damn hilarious. I have always been a free spirt and I hope this video inspires young girls too. You can do anything you wanna do.”
When I was seven years old I could play “Hot Cross Buns” on the piano but here’s Lady Gaga basically being a little piano prodigy. The video, which was shot in 1993, is short, sweet and foreshadows what was to come… well, except for her daring sense of fashion. Who knew this headband-wearing pianist would later wear a smelly meat dress on the red carpet?
We’ve all heard about Katy Perry’s overly strict, religious parents, who forbid her from watching MTV and eating marshmallows in cereal (for real). In this clip from Katy Perry: Part of Me, we see a rare glimpse of her preparing to enter a book reading contest.
Lea Michele is pretty much exactly what we thought she’d look like as a kid. She’s prim, proper and has that adorable smugness she’s become known for on Glee. She went on Sally Jessy Raphael (woa flashback) and performed “Castle on a Cloud” from Les Mis, from her first broadway role at age nine, which puts unaccomplished 13-year-olds to shame.
Selena Gomez is 19 but she still looks pretty similar to her younger self (conspiracy?). Joking. Here she is auditioning for Wizards of Waverly Place. Even before she finished school she knew she wanted to be a singer and actress.
