Hear that? It’s the sound of hundreds of dancers’ hearts breaking. Vegas week is finally here and with it come the cruelest cuts of the competition. Favourites fall from grace, and underdogs survive and even thrive in the pressure cooker that is the Planet Hollywood Hotel.
Here are the top five moments from Vegas Week (in no particular order):
1) Hampton “The Exorcist” Williams bowing out of the competition: After receiving the longest standing ovation of the entire competition thus far, and leaving almost all the judges in tears, this beautiful creature of a popper decided to leave after being unable to hack Twitch and Comfort’s crazy fast Atlanta-style hip hop choreo. It’s sad but as Nigel said, this competition is meant for people who can adapt to other styles. ‘Tis the nature of the beast. Dragon House dancers Boris and Andre also found the hip hop round too tough, but last member Cyrus makes it all the way through and does an epic solo to boot!
Here’s his original performance:
2) Team Ballroom: Favourites Whitney Carson and Lindsay Arnold are not only blonde bombshell ballroom dancing divas, they are also childhood friends who have danced together since they were little. And coincidence (or maybe not), the two end up rooming together in Vegas! How adorbs! And it seems that there’s no cattiness between the girls as they support each other throughout the week and even make it to the very last round before the Green Mile! Let’s hope there’s room in the top 20 for both of them, the fact that they’re both so similar makes me a little nervous.
3) Alexa Anderson:
This girl got more screen time than anyone else. A beautiful girl and contemporary dancer, it seemed like with Alexa, the lights were on and nobody was home. In the Broadway round, she hit every move but forgot to show some personality, which is kind of the point of Broadway round. Adam Shankman event went as far to say he was tired of saving her and Tyce D’Orio said he was bored with her good lucks. Ouch. Luckily Alexa is able to pull out the waterworks at the last minute and show that, in the immortal words of Randy Jackson, she is truly in it to win it.
4) Poor Danielle Dominguez. After making it through Sonya’s difficult jazz choreography, even with whiny partner Shafiq Westbrook, she does the routine again to help out a partnerless contestant, who repays her by (albeit accidentally) kicking her in the head. She has to be rushed to the hospital to be checked out, which makes her late for the group round. Her group, who had to change their whole routine around to fit her in, end up producing a messy, under-rehearsed routine and Danielle gets axed. That must hurt, because if she wasn’t injured, she would have breezed right through.
5) Amelia Lowe: The very first audition of the season, this little flapper girl is definitely one to watch. With her memorable look and undeniable talent, it was a big surprise when Sonya asked her to dance for her life after the Jazz round. But her solo was breathtaking, and those legs! Amelia was crying, Shankman was crying, and Sonya looked about ready to eat her up. But Nigel felt that she needs to work on expressing herself through other people’s choreo. Hope she takes the note!
That’s all folks! Next week we find out who will be in the Top 20 for Season 9!
