Victoria Abraham defines one up and coming artist each week so you can impress your friends with your musical brilliance. This week, she tackles Netsky, a DJ from Edegem, Belgium.
This European DJ and producer is only 23, but his beats have been turning heads ever since he came on the scene in 2009. His music is in the liquid funk style, which is a sub-genre of drum and bass that includes multiple instrumental layers and vocals. He’s scheduled to release a second album in 2012.
Origins: Edegem, Belgium.
Real name: Boris Daenen. Netsky, his stage name, is based on a computer virus of the same name.
Known for: We love his mix of uplifting melodies, jungle sound, vocal led classics and dance floor anthems.
Used in a sentence: “Netsky brings out your inner b-boy/robot/dance diva and makes you dance like no one is watching.”
File next to: High Contrast, London Elektricity
Download now: Put your dancing shoes on and listen to his newest single, “Give & Take.” If you haven’t listened to many DJs, this will definitely pique your musical tastebuds.
Fun facts: Netsky’s been described as Drum and Bass’s “hottest property.” When he first started out, he secured releases on some of the biggest names on the Drum and Bass scene, such as Liq-Weed Ganja, Spearhead and Talkin Beatz in less than 12 months. He also gained DJ support from artists such as Friction, Hype and Fabio.
Career highlights: Twenty ten was a big year for Netsky. He released his chart-topping, self-titled, debut album and his first release with Hospital Records, called “Memory Lane.” That same year Radio One nominated him for “Essential Mix Of The Year,” and he won the “Best Newcomer Producer” award at the Drum and Bass Arena Awards.
