We speculated last week why Katy Perry joined the army in her new video for “Part of Me” and of course, it would be because of a bad breakup. In the beginning of the Ben Mor-directed video Perry splits from her sleazy beau and is so angry that she decides to join the Marines. The beauty queen goes to a gas station washroom and chops of her hair into an unflattering crop — though she still manages to pull it off.
We watch Perry maintain the sparkling part of her soul that her boyfriend could never take away. Between scenes of her crawling under barbed wire and being submerged in icy cold water, she burns a letter from her ex and sings: “You chewed me up and spit me out / Like I was poison in your mouth / You took my light, you drained me down / That was then and this is now.”
This song is the perfect breakup anthem, which is kind of fitting considering she just separated from her husband Russell Brand. Still, she wrote the song long before their split so it’s coincidental that it would come out now.
