Just when you thought no one would turn down Oprah, a newcomer to the bizz does just that. Perez Hilton.com reports that Precious star, Gabourey Sidibe, 26, reportedly turned down an invite from the Queen of talk shows to the Academy Awards.
The Brooklyn native apparently didn’t want to get too friendly with Oprah. “Oprah called me and was like, ‘Hey girl, do you want to ride together?’ I was like, ‘I got it Oprah, calm down. I don’t want to show up with you. People will think we’re too cool,” she said.
However, the actress is still star struck by Oprah and there are no hard feelings between the two stars.
“She’s the only person that I’m continually star-struck by. When I meet people I get used to them very quickly because everyone seems like a friend because I watch them on TV. But Oprah is the only one I can’t get used to,” she admitted.
The film is based on the novel Push by Sapphire, and is about a young woman who is verbally, sexually and physically abused by her parents. It follows her struggle as an illiterate overweight teen expecting her second child and her last chance to get an education. Sidibe was chosen out of 300 girls called to audition for the lead in the film and surprisingly had no acting experience at the time.
Oprah and the film do go hand in hand however. After success at Sundance Film Festival and 2009 Cannes Film Festival, Tyler Perry announced that he and Oprah would be providing promotional assistance to the film. It went on to win the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.
