Interview: Meaghan Smith Conquered Stage Fright, Next Step: the World of Music

Posted by Sara Harowitz on February 19th, 2010

For someone who wants to be a professional singer, stage fright is just about the worst thing you can get. Unfortunately for pop/folk singer Meaghan Smith, it was something she had to deal with.

“It’s just terrible and really frustrating because I felt that I could do a good job of my songs when I was alone,” the 30-year-old Smith told andPOP.  “But I got in front of people and kind of just fell apart.”

Lucky for Smith, she was able to get over her fear. When the London, Ontario, native moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, for a job, the fresh start helped her. That, and the fact that she was so determined to get over her fear that she Googled it.  Smith stumbled upon an interview with Patty Griffin, also a victim of stage fright, in which Griffin said that the only way to get over the fear was to go through it.

“It meant getting up on stage and knowing that I was going to suck and be terrified,” Smith said. Eventually she could get on stage without shaking, and after four years of battling it, she became the confident performer she is today.

“I am now at the point where I don’t get stage fright,” she said with pride. “[Performing] is one of my favourite things to do now.”

And it’s a good thing, too, because Smith’s music career is about to take flight. Her first full-length album, The Cricket’s Orchestra, was just released on last Tuesday (Feb. 9).

But her career as a musician has been a long-time coming. Smith’s parents, both musicians, surrounded her with all types of music, from classical concertos to rock n’ roll tunes.

“I listened to everything I could get my hands on,” she said. “It was a really encouraging and creative environment to grow up in.”

When she was seven-years-old, Smith’s mother tried to teach her how to play the piano. Like many parent-child teaching attempts, it did not go over so well.

“I was a brat and my mom was just trying to teach me,” she said. Since the piano fiasco, Smith has never learned to read music. Instead she plays instruments by ear.

Still, Smith’s lack of music theory didn’t stop her from flourishing with musical talent. By the time she was in Grade 6, Smith had written her first full-length song. And that was just the beginning. Even when she was working as a storyboard artist in Halifax, Smith was writing songs. The result today is an orchestral 1920’s, ’30’s and ’40’s-infused album of pop songs based on personal experiences.

“I don’t think any of us are really alone in our experiences,” Smith said. “I think it’s good for us to go through stuff together.”

“Human behaviour is really what inspires me,” she added.

And it’s purely evident in her songs, such as “A Little Love” about a crush she had for seven years, and “I Know” about how her grandfather can never say that he loves her, but lets her know in different ways.

“I really try to let each song speak for itself,” she said. “I try to take each song as its own individual story and its own tiny little world.”

In a society where everyone wants to be a musician, it can often be hard to locate the real talent. But Smith has it, and she can’t wait to show it to the world.

“I’m trying to find my fans and I’m hoping they’re trying to find me too,” she said. “It’s been a really great experience for me [so far] and I’m only seeing good things in my future.”

And by the looks of it, she’s right.
