Marit Larsen was still missing her four front teeth when she got her first taste of the stage as the role of Molly in Annie. She was only seven.
And while she has since ditched the ginger wig for a microphone and guitar, she can credit her love for performance and music back to that early age.
“It was music, music, music,” Larsen told andPOP of her childhood. She was born just outside Oslo, Norway, and lived between two farms and a shopping mall. Her father was a professional cello player, so she was exposed to music all her life.
Larsen’s claim to fame can be traced back to pop duo M2M, which started when she was 15. Together with Marion Raven, they took over the 90’s charts in Norway as well as other parts of Europe, Japan, and even the United States. They sold over two million albums.
“We were so young,” Larsen, now 26, said. It was nice for them to have each other to lean on and to relate to, she added. “Now when I get a hit solo record I can go have coffee with myself,” she said with a laugh.
Larsen began her solo career in 2006 with the Norwegian release of her debut album, Under The Surface. She followed up with sophomore LP The Chase in 2008.
Now Larsen, a genuine and kindred spirit, is ready to take on North America. After releasing a successful compilation album, If A Song Could Get Me You, in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, Larsen is getting ready to do the same in America.
To start off she has released a single of the same name. “It’s about having let someone go and desperately regretting it,” she said of the song. “It’s a pretty sad story. People are using it now to get their exes back!”
With her sweet voice, truthful lyrics, and upbeat melodies, Larsen is on her way to winning the heart of the West. Having grown up in Norway, English is Larsen’s second language. But based on her song writing, you’d never guess it.
“English being my second language, I can even be inspired by a simple word that I like the sound of because I can see it from the outside,” she said. “To me English is the pop music language. [But] I of course have challenges.”
And while she has fans all over the world, Larsen is the first to admit that she’s still a fan herself. Artists like Joni Mitchell, Feist and Regina Spektor top her list. Larsen recently saw Spektor perform. “I was just out of my mind!” she gushed.
Larsen, who can play the piano, guitar and mandolin, loves the ups and downs of being a solo artist like the women she admires.
“I’m in complete creative control,” she said, which allows her to play, as she calls it, ‘pop music with no rules.’
“Everything that goes with it – the not-so-fun parts – is more worthwhile and rewarding when I know it’s music that I really stand for,” she said.
As someone who writes about personal experiences in her songs, Larsen recognizes the power of music.
“I love everything about music,” she said. “When I hear a song I can fall in love, or remember what it’s like to be in love. In the absence of being in love you can almost fall in love with an artist if you hear the right words.”
So will North America fall in love with Larsen? Only time will tell. But she’s off to a darn good start.
