Lil Wayne’s Sentencing Delayed Due to Dental Surgery
The sentencing for rapper Lil Wayne has been delayed until March 2 due to dental surgery, according to MTVnews.com.
His attorney made the announcement earlier today (Tuesday, Feb. 9) in a Manhattan courtroom. Wayne was scheduled to be formally sentenced by a judge and begin serving his one-year jail term that is based on a 2007 arrest for attempted weapons possession that resulted in a guilty plea.
The rapper arrived at the courtroom shortly after 2 p.m. today with his label heads Birdman and Slim and sat quietly while his lawyer, Stacey Richman, spoke.
Richman informed the judge that she sent a notice to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office that Lil Wayne is suffering from a cracked tooth and needed to postpone his sentence to get treatment. The judge agreed and ruled to reschedule Wayne’s sentencing for March 2.
The MC is due to undergo surgery on Feb. 12 in Miami, FL according to Richman. He will need anywhere from a week to 10 days of recovery. His defense offered prosecutors Feb. 25 as the date for Wayne to turn himself in after the surgery, but Judge Charles H. Solomon selected March 2 instead.
Judge Solomon then warned Wayne that he must fly to Miami today, insisting that if he waits until tomorrow, there is a chance that his surgery be delayed due to hazardous weather conditions leaving New York, where they are expecting a snowstorm.
“I don’t want this to get pushed back anymore,” Judge Solomon said. “This is the last adjournment.”
The delay has come as a bit of a surprise, especially since Wayne has been working hard recently to record music and videos that are to be released while he is in jail. He even said goodbye to his fans in a live streaming video earlier this morning.
