We are the World Recording: Lil Wayne’s Controversial Comment on Haiti and Katrina

Posted by Angelina Irinici on February 5th, 2010

MTV News reports that Lil Wayne expressed how honored and touched he was to be taking over Bob Dylan’s part on the remake of “We are the World.” He was soft-spoken and polite to reporters during the recording session, but one of the world’s biggest rap stars had one big – and gutsy – thing to say.

“I think it’s amazing what’s been done for Haiti,” Wayne said in a tent outside of the Him Henson Recording Studios in Hollywood. Right before walking away, he adds, “but I also think it’s amazing what hasn’t been done for New Orleans. Thank you!”

Wayne, who grew up in New Orleans and now resides in Miami, smiled, turned and left the crowd without taking any further questions.

He spoke of the impact that Haiti has had on him, “I have a few Haitian friends so it impacted me seriously because some of them lost some of their kids and I had to help out with those situations.”

The comment reminded writers of the notorious comment made by Kanye West: “George Bush doesn’t care about black people,” during the 2005 all-star benefit for victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

Michael Hecht, president and CEO of Greater News Orleans Inc., told MTV News that the rapper’s comments don’t accurately depict what is going on in the city of Louisiana.

“The New Orleans region since Katrina has been the recipient of tens of billions of dollars of assistance, not to mention scores of individuals who have committed their time and effort to rebuilding the city and region,” said Hecht, whose group is the leader of nonprofit economic development organizations in Southeast Louisiana.

Requests for further comment from Weezy were denied by a spokesperson for this story at press time. Wayne did his part in helping the New Orleans; he donated $200,000 to rebuild a park that he played at as a child.

Greater New Orleans Community Data Center records that there has been a total of $120.5 billion in recovery investments since the storm in 2005.

Karl Senner, 24, born and raised in NOLA, lived through the hurricane and helped rescue stranded residents for days during the storm. He told MTV News that people may have learned from Katrina and that is why there is such a sudden rush to help Haiti.

“I think the immediate support for Haiti can be credited a lot to the text-messaging giving, which is an avenue that wasn’t really around five years ago,” he said. “Also, I think responses to things like this has become an issue more so since Katrina. It was a learning experience for all of us.”

“In some ways, a big plus side of Katrina for New Orleans is that it’s given the city a fresh start, a clean slate,” he said.
