You can’t exactly call it a matter of time, because Solange Knowles only just worked her way into the indie rock scene when she covered The Dirty Projectors’ “Stillness is the Move” late last year.
But her invitation to guest on Of Montreal’s upcoming album comes as no surprise.
Yes, Kevin Barnes informed Stereogum in an interview that Solange Knowles and possibly Janelle Monae, a new-wave R&B songstress, have confirmed contributing roles on the psychadelic rock troupe’s upcoming effort, potentially titled False Priest or The Controller Sphere.
In an interview with the Guardian UK after being declared Artist of the Year, Beyonce credited her little sister for turning her onto the indie scene.
“My sister has put me on to bands like Of Montreal,” Beyonce said. “I would love to do something on the next album.”
It didn’t take much more than that to get Barnes’ imagination unfurling.
“When I heard that she said that, I thought ‘Oh, I should try to get something going’,” Barnes told Stereogum. “I started writing this song and then next thing I know, it’s so weird that she would never in a million years listen to it, let alone record it!”
Barnes said the new album will be a funkier vibe (a clip of a new song is available on Stereogum), borrowing more from legends like Parliament Funkadelic, so the addition of some soul singers is a sensible choice as much as a strong publicity stunt.
