Nickelback Voted Worst Band in the World

Posted by Sara Harowitz on December 10th, 2009

nickelbackWant something to make you feel proud to be a Canadian?

You might want to keep looking.

Readers of the United Kingdom’s Word Magazine recently voted on who they think the worst band in the world is, and the majority of them said the title belongs to the Canadian rock band Nickelback, reports CHARTattack.com.

Nearly 20 per cent of Word Magazine’s voters agreed that Nickelback was the worst band in the world, with only Lighthouse Family, a long-forgotten British pop duo, coming close with 14 per cent of the poll’s vote.

And while a Canadian band takes the top spot, Word readers directed most of their dislike towards local bands, including Toploader, M People, The Troggs, and Beautiful South. American alternative rock band Maroon 5 took in 6.6 per cent of the vote, and the Irish band Snow Patrol took in 5.2 per cent.

Here is Word Magazine‘s worst bands in the world list:

1. Nickelback – 19.8 per cent
2. Lighthouse Family – 14.3 per cent
3. Toploader – 11.8 per cent
4. Razorlight – 9.8 per cent
5. Savage Garden – 8.4 per cent
6. M People – 7.5 per cent
7. Maroon 5 – 6.6 per cent
8. 4 Non Blondes – 5.5 per cent
9. Snow Patrol – 5.2 per cent
10. Spin Doctors – 3.6 per cent
11. Beautiful South – 2.0 per cent
11. Sleeper – 2.0 per cent
12. New Radicals – 1.1 per cent
14. Lighting Seeds – 0.9 per cent
14. The Troggs – 0.9 per cent
15. Crowded House – 0.5 per cent

Yet Billboard have named them the 7th greatest artist of the decade and the number one band of the decade. So it appears the band gets as much love as it does hate.

    I think their amazing.

  • Nina

If you were trying to write a smack piece about Nickelback, you fell short… unless your target audience doesn’t read anything else nor knows math. 20% of mags leaves 80% more of them for other reviews PLUS… now get your calculator out, 100% of all other music media outlets. Wow… so 20% of all mags is like.. well.. totally stupid dude… as this last sentence was. :) Thanks for the backup info Steven.

  • Sara Harowitz

Actually the article, if read in detail, is not a smack at Nickelback at all, but rather just a relay of information. As stated, the information was taken from CHARTattack.com, so if you would like to read their article, I’m sure it’s still on the site. And theirs is also not a stab at the band.
There is a difference between relaying the news and putting personal opinion into articles. This was not written from my point of view, nor does it relay my personal views on the band, which I have purposely kept to myself.
As well, the information is based solely on readers of Word Magazine – not of all magazines. So, yes, 20 per cent of readers of Word Magazine (which in this case was the majority of people who voted on the poll) was enough to crown Nickelback as Word Magazine’s pick for worst band.
It is simply an interesting fact that a random (and popular) Canadian band was voted as the worst in the world, and was followed by tons of British artists as well as some bigger names like Maroon 5 and Snow Patrol.
Once again, this is not my personal opinion. The fact that Billboard has given them honours is great, and furthers the random aspect of Word Magazine’s choice.
And it’s true as Stephen said – every band gets love and hate.
Thanks for sharing your comments, I hope this cleared some things up.

  • Rod

Sara Harowitz, i know Nickeleback and their millions of Fans could give a f”k about what your website and your readers think and i have no idea who most of the bands your’e website supports, just that most of them look like they are ready to roll u in an alley somewhere.

  • Sara Harowitz

    Dear Rod,
As I stated in my other post (see above yours), this article does not convey my personal views of Nickelback, nor does it convey andPOP’s views of Nickelback. It was simply an interesting fact that a band as hugely popular as Nickelback was voted the worst band in the world by ONE magazine’s readers. The poll was done by Word Magazine, not andPOP. Therefore it does NOT relay andPOP’s feelings about the band. The poll was NOT taken by andPOP readers. Word Magazine is an entirely different publication that is not related at all to andPOP.
Thank-you for your comment though! Nickelback fans sure are protective.
As for the bands that andPOP “supports,” I think you must be referring to our “Side B” element of the site that focuses specifically on less famous, less mainstream bands. It highlights bands that you might not otherwise have heard of, and gives the sort of “indie” culture a voice. But that is not to say we don’t “support” bigger bands – hey, if Nickelback gave us an interview, we’d take it.

  • Cece

Wow, then it appears that the readers of the United Kingdom’s Word Magazine have absolutely no taste in music. Nickelback is a widely loved band by millions of people and as someone who in employed at a place that regularly has huge concerts I can tell you that Nickelback was one out of the few artist among the many diverse singers and bands like Papa Roach, the new band Stereos, Beyonce, Lil Wayne, Blink 182 and Katy Perrey that completely sold out and still had people trying to get in. But then again, like Steven said, every band gets love and hate, its all part of something called fame. Although I have to say, the poll seems overly bias- almost every poll is but some of the artist on that poll are really huge American and Canadian bands and very popular and well liked.

Sarah has a point and the results of the poll from the magazine from United Kingdom are interesting but I really disagree, only because they have way too many fans, are extremely successful and I am a huge Nickelback fan! Either way if you think about it this poll wont make a huge effect on them because of there strong network of long time and new fans, not that i’m saying that is what this article is trying to do.

  • Aaron

Lots of people also like rock of love, and that’s trash as well. Being popular doesn’t translate into being good. Fans of Nickelback should try listening to some GOOD music, like…well, anything is better than Nickelback.

  • Jim

Funny you don’t hear WHY people don’t like Nickelback… all you hear is that “they suck” and “they are the worst band”… but no explanation…

    My theory? One word.

    Jealousy

  • steve

For those of you who don’t know this, a music professor at the Berkley University of California called Nickleback The Mcdonalds of Rock. I would like to point out one thing and that is Nickleback’s music is improving much better now that they are under Mutt Lange’s wing. I personaly hated their music from the past but think they have matured from the hate critisism that I personaly think they will improve their sound in the coming years Cheers!!!

  • Deev

    Hi everyone,

I am 30+,married, live in the UK and I think Nickelback are really entertaining. I love all kinds of music and usually attracted to something that is high energy, catchy, loud instruments especially guitars and drums. The selection of music I like is so varied that if I mentioned some other R&B groups that I also enjoy, you wouldn’t know how I like this kind of music. My point is regardless of what others like or dislike, should not really bother you. It’s your personal choice, your personality, the company you keep, mood etc that determines for yourself whether you like them or not. Enjoy the music, the experience and appreciate the choice and selection of music we are offered. On that note going to watch Nickelback at Wembley, London – UK – To all neutrals, if you want to be entertained, today there are only a few who can entertain as much as Nickelback, really high entertainment value!!

Nickelback = WORST BAND EVER. I actually want to kill people when I am forced to listen to this garbage at work. (I have no control over the radio)

I can actually feel myself heating up and shaking I hate it so much. No other band (even watered down pop country) makes me feel like this. These guys have the worst lyrics, (That “I’m a rockstar” song clearly appeals to people who have no life and want to BE a rock star so they live through it listening to this song.) they are ridiculously formulaic, and that guy’s voice makes me want to smack him 50 times. I don’t even really listen to much rock and roll anymore, but I know good rock when I hear it and this isn’t it. They have no talent, use the same chord progression in every song, and start each song with some “heartfelt” lyric, then go into how fucking “cool” they are, which shows blantant arrogance which is so annoying I want to puke. At least the hair metal bands in the 80′s had some good melodies to their tunes, but these guy’s lack any good melodic arrangements. Nickelback wants to BE those bands from the 80′s, but fail miserbly. It’s like the old guy who is 80 still dressing like he’s 20, but doesn’t realize he looks like a damn fool. I’d rather kill myself then ever want to hang out with these assholes, or any of there lameo fans. Time to die. From the hater of haterz, Ben

  • Brian

I’ll give you reason’s why they suck.

#1..all their rotten music sounds the same.

    #2…Chad’s voice horrible.

#3…All their music is overprocessed crap.

    $4..their lyrics suck.

    #5..their drummer is horrendous.

  • Texas

common on. the lyrics, such as the photograph song, are down right pathetic. seems like the song was composed by a 8 year old who is still in 1st grade. “Look at this photograph – everytime it makes me laugh” ” how did my eyes get so red = and whats on joey’s head”. what’s next, roses are red, violets are blue. The composition is as pathetic as it gets. maybe they should someone else write their songs.

I’m impressed, I must say. Really rarely do I encounter a blog that’s both educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you have hit the nail on the head. Your idea is outstanding; the issue is something that not enough people are speaking intelligently about. I am very happy that I stumbled across this in my search for something relating to this.
