Interview: Where is DJ Tanner Now? Candace Cameron Bure Talks to andPOP

Posted by Sara Harowitz on December 8th, 2009

Candace CameronCandace Cameron Bure just can’t seem to escape the Tanner name.

It’s been almost 20 years since “Full House” first went to air, but Cameron Bure is still connected to the Tanners. Even though she’s now 33 years old with a husband and three kids, and starring on a new ABC Family TV show, the last name that defined her childhood acting career seems to follow her wherever she goes.

“[It’s] kind of ironic,” she said of the fact that her character Summer on ABC’s new show “Make It or Break It” was engaged to a character named Steve Tanner. “I was like, ‘Seriously? Really guys?’ And they were like, ‘What?’ And I waited one, two, three seconds. Then everyone was like, ‘OH!’”

“I will never escape the Tanner name!” she added with a laugh.

If you grew up in the late ’80s or early ’90s, you know Cameron Bure as the teenaged DJ Tanner. “Full House,” one of the most popular family sitcoms on TV at the time, gave Cameron Bure her first dose of stardom and success.

“It was such a huge part of my life,” said the California native, who’s been acting since she was five. “It’s just been an incredible family show. I loved everyone that I worked with and had a great experience. I made friendships that will last forever. I was so happy to have been a part of that show.”

And if Cameron Bure ever manages to slip away from the public eye without DJ recognition, her son is quick to inform them.

Candace Cameron“My little one, my 7-year-old, he finds it quite fascinating,” Cameron Bure said of the acting world. “He’s fast to offer up the information. [He’ll say] ‘Did you know this is my mom, Candace Cameron, she was on Full House!’ I know he’s proud of me.”

Cameron Bure is married to NHL player Valeri Bure. They spent much time living in Calgary while Valeri played for the Flames, and in Montreal when he played for the Canadiens. While her husband was playing hockey, Cameron Bure took time off of acting to be a full-time mom. Ten years later, now that Valeri has retired from the game, Candace Bure is back with her first love: acting.

“Once he retired it was a great opportunity for me to get back in the business because I loved it so much,” she said. “So I started looking at roles. ABC Family came to me and presented ‘Make It or Break It.’”

The Bures now live in L.A., where “Make It or Break It” is filmed. The show is a drama based around a group of young gymnasts who are trying to make it at the Olympic level.

“You really just don’t know what you’re going to get on a television show,” she said. “Fortunately the show’s been great, it took off.”

“Make It or Break It” is ABC’s second highest rated show. After taping just 10 episodes, the show was a big enough hit that they decided to bring back the first season for a second half, which starts airing in the U.S. on Jan. 4.

“That’s always a fun thing, just to come out of the gate and be a hit,” she said. “So we’re hoping all the fans will come back and tune in for the second half of the season.”

The show is not yet airing in Canada, but Cameron Bure said it has been picked up by a Canadian network and should be appearing soon.

And while Cameron Bure is still tightly tied to her DJ Tanner roots, the success of “Make It or Break It” has also caused her some recognition.

“I had a couple kids come up to me and say, ‘Are you the girl from Make It or Break It?’” she said. “That was really great.”

Along with the ABC show, Cameron Bure has a health and fitness book due out in the summer of 2010, as well as a production company that is currently working on various projects.

Aside from acting and being a mother, Cameron Bure loves to Tweet. She can be followed at candacecbure.

“I Tweet a whole lot!” she said. “I tweet a lot about what I eat, what exercise I do. I love to share pictures.”

She also loves to follow her friends on Twitter, including fellow “Full House” stars Bob Saget (Danny Tanner) and John Stamos (Uncle Jesse). Cameron Bure is still in touch with these Tanner household castmates, as well as Dave Coulier (Uncle Joey). She saw them all recently when Stamos was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

And while Cameron Bure is up-to-date with popular technology (“I’m a computer nut!” she gushes), she is not a fan of all the latest fads, namely Twilight.

“None of us have ever seen the movies or read the books,” she said. “Vampires just aren’t that appealing to me, and it’s a little bit of an overload because everything’s vampires. We’ve sort of just stayed away from it.”

One thing they haven’t stayed away from is Canada. Living in Montreal and Calgary, Cameron Bure and her family grew to love the country for its beauty, and in spite of its cold.

“I have great friends in Canada,” Cameron Bure said. “And I like your national anthem. I know it by heart!”
