Adam Lambert is ‘Goin in a New Direction’

Posted by Sara Harowitz on December 3rd, 2009

Adam LampertAfter an intense week in the spotlight, Adam Lambert is vowing to take a step back.

The American Idol runner-up has finally admitted that he was a little perturbed by the huge reaction to his controversial performance at the American Music Awards last Sunday night, reports rollingstone.com.

In a series of tweets that he posted on his Twitter account on Monday, the star said he was going to drop some of his spectacle so that people would focus more on his music.

“Goin in a new direction now. Focus back on the music,” he wrote.

“Don’t worry friends: I’m still gonna be me,” he added. “Always. W/o apologies. Just gonna experiment differently w how I present myself.”

He concluded by adding, “I’m learning” before thanking his fans for their supportive comments during what he described as “a looong week.”

Lambert’s intense week in the limelight started with a scandalous performance of “For Your Entertainment” at the American Music Awards, which featured the musician making out with his male keyboardist and simulating oral sex with a male dancer.

Some of the performance was edited for the West Coast rebroadcast of the show, but Lambert stood by his performance, saying backstage that any cuts to the performance would be “discrimination.”

“My goal was not to piss people off,” he said. “It was to promote freedom of expression and artistic freedom.”

Of the 14 million people who watched the Awards on ABC, only 1,500 phoned in to complain to the network. Still, ABC cancelled Lambert’s scheduled performance on Good Morning America, claiming the singer was unpredictable in a live environment.

Instead, Lambert played two songs on CBS’ The Early Show, during which he was interviewed, and made sure not to apologize for offending anyone during his performance. Lambert argued that the Awards featured many other instances of mature content, and said, “I think it’s up to the parents to discern what their child is watching on television. Lady Gaga smashing whiskey bottles, Janet Jackson grabbing a male dancer’s crotch, Eminem talking about how Slim Shady has 17 rapes under his belt – there was a lot of very adult material on the AMAs this year and I know I wasn’t the only one.”
