Black Sabbath’s Ronnie James Dio Diagnosed with Stomach Cancer
Ronnie James Dio, who has played with such bands as Black Sabbath and Rainbow, has been diagnosed with stomach cancer, reports NME.com.
The 67-year-old singer, who replaced Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath in 1979, is set to undergo treatment immediately, said his wife and manager, Wendy.
“Ronnie has been diagnosed with the early stages of stomach cancer,” she said. “We are starting treatment immediately at the Mayo Clinic.”
Dio currently fronts the bands Heaven & Hell and Dio.
“Long live rock and roll, long live Ronnie James Dio,” Wendy said. “Thanks to all the friends and fans from all over the world that have sent well wishes. This has really helped keep his spirit up.”
“After he kills this dragon, Ronnie will be back on stage, where he belongs, doing what he loves best, performing for his fans.”
As clashmusic.com reports, it’s been a bit of a tough year for Black Sabbath. The group’s early material was re-issued, but original singer Ozzy Osbourne sued guitarist Tony Iommi over ownership of the band’s name.
