Just Bust a Move, Prime Minister Harper

Posted by Stephen Baldwin on November 17th, 2009

Stephen HarperPrime Minister Stephen Harper’s Bollywood debut was so awkward I could barely watch, but I couldn’t look away either.

There has never been any mistaking Harper for a cool guy; an Obama-type personality. Harper belongs on TLC, not MTV, and that isn’t news. But his appearance on India’s version of So You Think You Can Dance reaffirmed that there really isn’t much personality under his tough conservative skin.

In early October, Harper performed on stage with famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Harper’s rendition of The Beatles’ With a Little Help From My Friends was actually…not too bad. It was the first time that many had seen Harper peek his head out of a Conservative shell that he’d been hiding in since he became Prime Minister. I started to cut him some slack.

But the on-stage embarrassment in India made me reassess my thought. Harper stumbled down a step on the stage as he was being introduced, and then proceeded to put on the most bland display of rhythm and dance that I’ve ever seen. Watching his wife Laureen was almost as disappointing.

Being a good dancer is by no means a Canadian Prime ministerial requirement, but cultural enthusiasm should be. Even George W used to get down. Loosen up Harper.

We want a Prime Minister not a break dancerm

Give the guy some credit, have you ever been invited to dance with the world watching?

  • Stephen Baldwin

Harper represents one of the world’s most diverse countries, it’s his responsiblity to be in the public eye, and it’s expected that he’ll show some form of cultural enthusiasm.
All jokes aside, I think it would be pretty refreshing to have a president who had the humility to show off some breakdancing skills.

First of all, SB – we don’t have a president. But that’s OK, I’m sure you meant prime minister.
The other comment I have is that you suggested he dance a bit more like George W. might have. But didn’t GWB get made fun of the world over for looking dorky and out of place whenever he did?
I’d way rather have my nation’s leader look a little wooden over stupid any day…

  • Stephen Baldwin

Didn’t anticipate such a conservative response to this, nice change though. I’d say that was just an observation, more for wit, not a suggestion. Dubya made his reputation as an idiot long before any dorky dancing, but that’s not the point. It’s not about choosing one or the other, this is a situation that allows middle ground, and Harper has been around long enough to have some idea of what that balance is. Canadians should always have high expectations of their leader.

  • http://hincheysstore.blogspot.com Hinchey’s Store

Hey man. That’s no problem – everyone’s allowed to have their own opinions, right? Didn’t mean to come across as a complete die-hard! I think he’s got rhythm, but probably not a whole lot of dancing skill… I can keep a beat and play an instrument, but don’t ever ask me to dance – broken ankles would result.
