“Reading art criticism is bo-ring,” reads the Facebook fan page for ArtStars*. ”We show the fun side of the art world onscreen (and all the scrappy snippets of convo you missed out on).”
ArtStars* is a unique endeavour that sheds light on a different side of Toronto’s art core. As a video blog about the Toronto art scene, ArtStars* goes to art parties and openings and checks out the art, the people, the scene, and the vibe.
The videos, which can all be found on the group’s Youtube channel, are hosted and executive produced by Nadja Sayej. Sayej is a journalist who writes for the Globe and Mail and the New York Times. The other two members of the ArtStars* team are Jeremy Bailey, who operates the video camera, and Ryan Edwards, the other editor.
ArtStars* loves to uncover and showcase local artistic talent.
“If you deem yourself worthy of art star status and want to be featured on our show – or you are a musician or fashion designer who would love to strut your stuff – then drop us a line,” it says on their fan page. ”We wanna hear you holla.”
ArtStars* was recently featured on the cover of Eye Weekly Magazine’s Oct. 1 issue.
“It’s been a brief, but at the very least noted, tenure,” Eye Weekly writes of ArtStars*. “The perpetually turned-out, charismatic Sayej, with her penchant for all things lamé, her disarming sneer and her (how to put this delicately?) formidable rack, has become a gonzo presence at [art] openings.”
ArtStars* thrives on being different and pushing the boundaries of art criticism. For instance, instead of participating in Oct. 3′s Nuit Blanche, they declared war on it.
“There are too many fog machines!” Sayej told Eye Weekly. “Too many fog machines and too many light sculptures.”
Sayej also isn’t pleased with the way the media is covering the Toronto arts scene.
“The whole thing is a response to the fact that arts reporting is often pushed to the back pages with the classifieds while Afghanistan and burning buildings are always on A1,” she said.
“I’m curious whether the general public’s impression has gone down, or whether it’s just within the arts community,” ArtStars* camera man Bailey told the magazine. “I think, in the arts community, it’s way down. The projects aren’t getting better; they’re getting lazier. The big-name artists who are coming in are just token selling-points. The only good thing I can say about it is that it’s better than Luminato — which is the worst arts festival I’ve ever seen, in terms of the impression you get while it’s happening. In the arts community, people are pretty jaded; there’s just nothing exciting. Why have 200 bad Nuit Blanche projects when you can have 10 really amazing ones?”
ArtStars* spent the night of NuitBlanche broadcasting live, all-hours, guerilla-style coverage of the event on the side of the Art Gallery of Ontario.
“Saying we’re the new leaders of video art criticism may sound ridiculous,” Sayej said. “But, I mean, art criticism has become something ridiculous in itself.”
The concept of ArtStars* can be a little difficult to grasp, and even to describe. But one can guess that’s probably the way they like it.
And regardless of their definition, one thing is for sure: ArtStars* are different. They are pushing the boundaries of art criticism and defining the art world on their own terms.
All ArtStars* videos be seen at http://artstarstv.com.
