Screech’s ‘Saved By the Bell’ Tell-All – Fun or Fabrication?
Everyone’s favourite geek is back, and he’s spilling the Bayside beans. However, not everyone is jumping for scandalous joy.
Perez Hilton recently blogged that Dustin Diamond (better known as Samuel “Screech” Powers on the 90′s TV sitcom hit “Saved By the Bell”) has less juice to squeeze out than a marshmallow. Hilton feels Diamond’s tell-all book entitled, “Behind the Bell” is less of a get-up and more of a let-down.
According to recent releases from the book, Diamond claims he could smell a “certain smoke” coming from the other cast members’ dressing rooms. He also claims that Mark-Paul Gosselaar, who played every pre-teen girl’s crush Zack Morris, used steroids before filming “Saved By the Bell: The College Years.”
Diamond writes, speaking about Gosselaar, ”He suddenly exploded with manliness, loading 25 pounds of muscle on his once-scrawny frame in, oh, about a month.”
But as Hilton says on his blog, by the time “The College Years” started filming in 1994 Gosselaar was 20, and a lot of guys bulk up around that age. And, in comparison to Diamond, who WOULDN’T look bulky?
Diamond is also apparently suggesting that there was a lot of chemistry off-camera between the cast members: “If Kelly [Tiffany Thiessen] was interested in Slater [Mario Lopez] one week, then backstage there was a lot going between them in Mario [Lopez]‘s room. Then, if Jessie [Elizabeth Berkley] kisses Zack [Mark-Paul Gosselaar], then you know Elizabeth Berkley is going in Mark-Paul’s room.”
Hilton deems these accusations to be “lame lame lame.”
“Behind the Bell,” which Gotham Books preempted from Objective Entertainment’s Jarred Weisfeld, has promised to detail “sexual escapades among cast members, drug use, and hardcore partying,” according to New York Magazine, and does not currently have a release date.
Diamond, who suffered a sex tape scandal back in 2006 in which he romps with two women, hasn’t had much of a career since “Saved By the Bell” ended in 1997.
So – is the book a true deep-dish or just a way to get Diamond back in the spotlight? Only the Bell will tell.
