Rant ‘N Rave: Disney Channel Stars

Posted by Irene Ogrodnik on April 20th, 2009

Miley Cyrus Album PicsBack in the day, the word “Disney” brought thoughts of fairy godmothers, evil stepsisters and happily ever afters into our minds. The Disney stars that most of us looked up to were Cinderella, Pocahontas and, of course, Mickey Mouse (although now I’m not sure why).

But nowadays, all that has changed. When most children and teenagers hear the word “Disney,” they tend to think of the famous actors whose careers were launched on the television network, the Disney Channel.

Due to shows like ‘Hannah Montana’ or the Disney Channel Original Movie ‘High School Musical,’ it is now virtually impossible to ignore any gossip associated with Disney’s princess Miley Cyrus or Brangelina wannabes Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens.

With plenty of shame, I will admit that even I watch some of these shows on a somewhat regular basis (I fully blame my boyfriend’s younger nieces for my sudden semi-addiction to shows like ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ and ‘Sonny With a Chance’).

But while some Disney Channel stars have what it takes to establish a lifelong successful career outside of the Disney franchise, others, frankly, do not.

And so, here is a short homage to certain Disney Channel actors who, for some reason or another, will stay here for some years to come:

The “Creepy” Disney Channel Star:

Kevin Jonas: As the eldest brother of the overrated Jonas Brothers music group, Kevin takes the cake for the creepiest member. I’m not quite sure if it’s his awkwardness on the television screen that freaks me out (remember his role in ‘Camp Rock’?) or the fact that he looks like he’s about to turn thirty instead of twenty-two. Either way, this Jonas bro, along with Joe and Nick, needs to stop polluting the music and television biz before I start having Kevin/Bogeyman-like nightmares.

The “Heartthrob” Disney Channel Star:

Zac Efron: When it comes to this ‘High School Musical’ actor, I can see why teenagers and yes, even adults, adore this young man. Sure the earwax situation was a bit…gross but Zac is still cute and charming, even if his ears are filthy.  When Q-Tips aren’t thrown in his face, Zac proves he can sing, dance and act in roles like ‘Hairspray,’ and ‘Summerland.’ On top of that, his gorgeous and talented co-star/girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens also proves that this young guy is worth having around.

The “Triple Threat” Disney Channel Star:

Ashley Tisdale:  Actress, singer, songwriter Ashley Tisdale demonstrates she has what it takes to make it in the showbiz for years to come. From her role as Maddie on ‘The Suite Life of Zack & Cody’ to her performance as Sharpay in the High School Musical movie franchise, Ashley knows she will always stay in the spotlight. Her passion, personality and dedication to her work will make this star last years longer in Hollywood than most of the other actors on the Disney Channel network.

The “One to Steal the Spotlight” Disney Channel Star:

Brenda Song: If you ever watched an episode of ‘The Suite Life with Zack & Cody’ you should realize that show is watchable because of one character: London Tipton. Brenda plays the ditzy spoiled hotel heiress London (yup, an allusion to Paris Hilton) and, if I could say so myself, she does quite an excellent job doing so. Unfortunately, this 21-year-old has yet to truly make it big in Hollywood.  Blame it on the Jonas Brothers.

The “Underrated” Disney Channel Star:

Selena Gomez: From all of the actors who found fame on the Disney Channel, Selena, in my opinion, has the most natural acting ability. When you watch her as Alex Russo on ‘The Wizards of Waverly Place’ it’s hard to believe this young starlet is only sixteen. Currently, Selena is better known for her YouTube videos with best friend/other Disney Channel star Demi Lovato. After the two girls posted a clip back in 2008, Miley Cyrus and her friend Mandy uploaded a parody video of Selena and Demi—fuelling rumours the girls were feuding (however, according to their constant Twitter posts to one another, the girls actually seems like “the best of friends!”).

Either way, Selena has everything that Miley lacks. Maturity, self-control and, oh yeah, a good-girl image.

The “Overrated” Disney Channel Star:

Miley Cyrus: Just like with Kevin Jonas and the creepy thing, Miley Cyrus is her own competitor in this category. Even though I can see the allure in ‘Hannah Montana,’ it does not excuse the fact that Miley is a poor role model. By sixteen, Miley appeared in more provocative poses and eyebrow raising behaviour than plenty of other actors who are in their mid twenties. From a girl who apparently comes from a “wholesome family” she needs a bit more control. Miley is well on the path of becoming the next Britney Spears (the mentally unstable one). Just because Miley brings in the money, she’s still relatively a child and needs to be treated and act like one.

Obviously it was a slow news day.
Pick on someone your own age.
    Kbye.

  • Stan

You are obviously out of touch. Industry experts, most critics, and people in the business world have acknowledge that Miley is by far the most likely to succeed and expand her career outside of the the Disney empire without taking the same route Britney. She is hardly overrated, and works hard for her craft, and is as good and actor and singer as any her age. She is the least “Fake” of the group and people like that. She reminds me of Angelina Jolie who was a little wild at 16. Miley is a little more in control however, which should work to her advantage.

  • Blair Waldorf

This article is such a joke, try researching your “facts” a little better.

  • Amanda

I agree, Selena Gomez is definitely underrated.

What’s up with everyone elses comments? It’s a opinion blog – not a news article. Just because industry experts think Miley is here to stay for years to come, it doesn’t mean that will be the case. I’m sure a lot of people did not predict Britney’s downfall when she was 16.

The author is just stating her dislike for Miley as a role model. So what? And Blair, not sure what facts you are referring to but I know my Disney Channel stars and the author did not say anything incorrect.

  • Elora

Obviously you’re out of touch with the teen world, because the Jonas Brothers are huge, and they’re actually talented. The only reason they should leave disney is because they’re too good for it.

  • Rach

Slow news day? I don’t think the Jonas Brothers are overrated, at all. If anything, I think they’re underrated and underestimated by those outside of their core fanbase. No one is claiming they are The Beatles, but they’re hardly untalented. They’re singers, songwriters, musicians and more recently producers. Obviously they have a lot more growing to do as musicians, but people act as if they are the worst thing to ever happen to the music industry and that’s hardly the case.

And Jason Earles is by far the creepiest Disney star, imo.

  • Anonymous

Brenda Song is amazing, truly amazing and gorgeous. I enjoy watching her she truly steals the spotlight. Dylan and Cole Sprouse lack the chops, personality and talent Brenda has. I adore her strength. Brenda is by far the most likely to succeed and expand her career outside of the the Disney Channel. She has more talent than most of them. And that ashely something girl isn’t in the spotlight anymore, her songs crashed and her albums are flops (wikipedia is fake, it’s all fake) she is nothing.. Selena Gomez isn’t the most underrated Disnet starlet, the most underrated is Debby Ryan. Selena is overrated and she gets way too much media coverage for fighting with Miley Cyrus.

  • Kevin Jonas lover

Get a life, and stop picking on these stars just because they have talent and you have none.

  • Alessia Jones

I think everyone who commented on this blog needs a life. You are bashing her (the author) for stating her opinion! She insults 2 out of 6 Disney Stars (the rest, if you haven’t noticed, she compliments) and you yell at her. Excuses like “lame” and “this isn’t researched” are your best comments?
Amanda is right. This isn’t breaking news, so I don’t understand this “slow news day”. While I may not agree that with the fact that Jonas Brothers are overrated, it is the author’s opinion. You need to all look up what an “opinionated blog” means.

And ‘Kevin Lover’? Really?! “Just because they have talent and you have none?” What are you? Eight?

  • kiara

in my opinion some of this is true and some of this is not. you can really tell this is about disney channel stars just by reading the comments, as most of their fans are little kids. i used to love the jonas brothers but now im getting a little sick of them as i think that their ‘famous’ status has gone to their heads. miley cyrus might make it outside disney but might not as alot of people hate her and are too embarrassed to admit that they like her music, and alot of people are just sick of hearing about her. i really, really love selena gomez aswell as i think she is very natural and looks very friendly

and all of the people saying bas stuff about this artical have a right to their opinion as does the author.

  • n&m(L)(L)(L)(L)

ok- miley cyrus to some may be overrated, but she is my IDOL she is one of the best role models there has been! – selena gomez is amazing and the jo bros are not overrated- but they are very Talented just like all of these stars and i think you should leave them alone this may be an opinonated blog but ever heard the saying “keep your opinions to yourself”? well you should stick to it.

  • http://disneychannel greg

You poeple stop! people have diffrent opinions.I go with alessia. And not with some other mail thats above.Ithink she might have an opinion about you people who wrote stuff about her.Iget how you don’t like her but, u r going to harsh on her.

  • http://ASK.COM LAUREN

HAHA…THEY MADE FUN OF MILEY CYRUS YEA IMA LAUGH WHEN SHE BECOME THE NEXT BRITTNEY SPEARS HAHA…NEXT THIN U NO SHE GOES BALD

  • http://None Blah Blah Blah

    I totally and fully agree.

I’m tired of seeing Zack Efron, I mean I can see how someone would like him, but he makes a really weird face when he sings long notes or gets all worked up. But, he is pretty mature compared to other Disney stars. (*cough*Miley*cough*)

I think Ashley is really talented. She was also in a movie called Picture This! that wasn’t Disney a year ago. I think it was an ABC movie, but I’m not sure. I watched it the other night, it was pretty good, it remided me of Cinderella.

Brenda has done a lot of Disney. She was on Suite Life of Zack and Cody, The Suite Life On Deck, Phil Of The Future, Stuck In The Suburbs, Get A Clue, The Ultimate Christmas Present, Wendy Wu; Homecoming Warriors, and That’s So Raven. And that’s only the Disney stuff, she was acting since she was 5-6.

I’m shocked I’ve been able to find someone else who gets the creeps from Kevin. He looks a lot more aged than he is, he looks really bad next to his brothers(not in personality, in looks), and he looks pretty awkward most of the time.

I think the exact same thing about Miley. Whenever I say I don’t like her and I have said she will end up like Britney, people respond “Whatever, you’re just jealous” or “She’s just a teen, leave her alone.” I get pretty ticked about that. I’m definitely not jealous, and what if she’s a teen? She’s still a role model either way and if she really wanted to be a “normal teen” than she shouldn’t have started with Disney.

Selena is a way better actress than Miley. She’s way more mature, calm, and she probably would be a good role model, you know if people actually noticed the poor girl.

  • Em

Wait, Zac Efron’s role in Hairspray proved he can act? You mean act like a superficial pop star, right? I thought the scenes in which he comes around and realizes he’s in love with Tracy were utterly unconvincing and proved he can only display a relatively small range of emotions.

But great write-ups on Brenda Song and Selena Gomez. I think Selena is starting to get as much recognition as she deserves for her film roles. I wouldn’t have picked Ashley Tisdale as the triple threat, and I gotta agree with Rach, Jason Earles is certainly creepier than Kevin Jonas.

  • n&m(L)(L)(L)(L)

i think miley cyrus wont turn out like britney she is all in all amazing whatever you guys say and leave her alone cuz she IS just a teen and you probaly ARE actually jealous.

  • http://none nina

well for me she half right and thats her personal jugdement so all the little haterzx up in hea should get a life cause thats dunm what uplouded
(to the auther of the blog)yes kevin from the jonas brothers is like three year of age difference from his brothe but that doesnt make him were it makes him unique different from his brather and that awesome butg again is ur opinion
i love that u wrote about disney channel stars and how the programs change between the year but that means they are progresing
(and yes for me selena gomez is one of the underrated people from disney)

  • James

I think the people you listed (those like Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens) are completely overrated and talentless. If it were for they’re looks and the Disney machine, they would be nothing today, and they’ll fade away within a year or so while being replaced by someone else. If anything, the only one I think has any talent from Disney and will last is Raven Symone, or her other Cheetah Girls. They have more talent in they’re pinky fingers then the stars you mentioned. Though, I do like Miley.
