Green DayGreen Day will celebrate the release of their eighth studio album next month with a small club show – a rarity for the mega-selling band – in New York City.

According to MTV Germany, the band will play the 700-capacity Bowery Ballroom on May 18, three days after “21st Century Breakdown” hits stores.

The album is the band’s follow-up to 2004’s “American Idiot,” which sold more than 12 million copies. As previously reported, the new album has a narrative structure, divided into three acts, that tells the story of a young couple named Christian and Gloria.

The first single, “Know Your Enemy,” will be released April 16, while the video for the track will debut April 24 on MTV and VH1 channels around the world.

Several hundred fans got a preview of the new material this week after the band staged two “surprise” club shows in San Francisco, where they played tunes from ”Breakdown” as well as older favourites. The trio is rumored to be planning two more “surprise” shows in Oakland next week.
