Temptations Tapped To Sing At NCAA Final Four
Motown legends the Temptations will sing the U.S. national anthem at the NCAA championship game in Detroit Monday night.
It marks the first time a vocal group, rather than a solo artist, will do the honours at the men’s basketball national championship game.
NCAA senior vice president Greg Shaheen told the Detroit News it was an honour to have the Temptations sing at the Final Four in the city of their roots. “This is a special treat for our fans, our student-athletes and everyone who traveled to Detroit for this year’s NCAA championship game,” he said.
The performance by the Temptations, featuring original member Otis Williams, will also help to celebrate the 50th anniversary this year of the Detroit-born Motown record label.
As one of its most successful acts, the Temptations sold 35 million records and scored 18 No. 1 singles during their 45-year career. Their hits include “My Girl,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” and “Papa Was a Rolling Stone.”
The group was inducted into the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame in 1989.
