Every kid wants to believe they have superpowers. We all remember scowling at the spoon on the kitchen table with avid concentration, convinced that eventually the spoon will jump off.
Lucky Dakota Fanning. She may not have mastered the power of telekinesis, (that’s Nick Gant’s job, played by Chris Evans), but is able to see the future in the new sci-fi thriller, Push.
Considering the hype and high expectations that have been surrounding this release, I was prepared for a bit more. It’s a good movie, I thoroughly enjoyed it, but don’t expect to be astounded by cinematic magnificence.
Under the direction of Paul McGuigan, Push appeals to those who love indulging themselves in the world of action, drama, and the fantasy element of film production. Or perhaps even just those who are there to merely indulge in Chris Evans. Those who liked Evans as Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four will enjoy his role as a telekinetic “mover” in Push.
I will confess to being a skeptic when it comes to otherworldly powers and covert government agencies. On the other hand, who doesn’t enjoy a little bit of the unreal? It’s that recurring childhood fantasy acted out on the big screen! If you’re looking for an escape from reality, this movie will provide 111 minutes of pure entertainment.
The story line goes as thus: Fanning plays the role of 13-year-old Cassie Holmes, who teams up with Gant in Hong Kong to overthrow a government agency known as the Division. This agency is led by Henry Carter, played by one of my personal favorite actors, Djimon Honsou. The Divisions goal is to artificially enhance these gifted individuals, creating elite human weapons, with the ultimate goal of forming an indestructible army. The main plot-point of this movie is that a test subject has escaped (Kira, played by Camilla Belle), and holds the key to bringing down the division.
For those who aren’t fluent in the language of the Division, Push focuses on categorizing each unique ability. Pushers can who influence people’s thoughts, watchers (like Fanning) can see the future, movers (like Evans) are telekinetic, sniffs contain tracking abilities linked to their sense of smell and shadows have the ability to make a person untraceable. If I’ve lost you, I can empathize, it’s a whole lot for us common folk to decipher.
At certain times the movie is so unrealistic that you sit and will yourself not to chuckle at the absurdity of it all. This story has been recycled a few times. A human is born with special powers, the villains want to get control of him/her, and eventually the epic confrontation occurs.
Despite the occasional lapses into the realm of the laughable, the film is very well put together. It has as great soundtrack, witty one-liners, a couple noteworthy fight sequences, and even the quintessential love story between Belle and Evans. The movie contains a strong cast that, for the most part, connects with the audience.
Evans and Fanning contain an undeniable chemistry, and at times they are reminiscent of squabbling siblings. For instance, Evans character constantly pokes fun at Fanning’s locks throughout the film, which are an interesting combination of blonde and pink. In contrast to this heartwarming connection, there was a disappointing lack of romance between his character and Belle’s. The conversation sometimes seems stilted, and the audience is not offered much explanation to their past. I felt like they were timid deer tip-toeing around each other, ready to bolt at sudden loud noises. It just didn’t seem natural, and it was glaringly obvious at certain points.
Bad chemistry aside, the audience was still privy to some great filming. Occasionally the movie would cut to these grainy, handheld takes of the action. It was an intelligent move on McGuigan’s part; by creating the fly-on-the-wall effect the audience was put in the Divisions “watchers” shoes. Another cool feature includes the comic-book effect that is integrated into the action.
I recommend seeing this movie, but I don’t suggest running to the theatre in search of the next “Batman”. Be prepared for a good movie, not an exceptional masterpiece.
Push left me with a slight sense of discontent. You know that feeling when your licking the last bit of ice-cream off the spoon, then you start panicking because you’re not even close to full yet? That’s how I felt when I exited the theatre. Good flavor, and I was left wanting more. There are a lot of holes left for a sequel to tie up, and I look forward to seeing what is possible in store for the next one.
