‘Phantom’ Sequel In The Works
“The Phantom of the Opera” is back from the dead — and coming to New York.
Andrew Lloyd Webber, the creator of the long-running musical, has revealed that a sequel called “Phantom: Love Never Dies” is in the works that takes place about a decade after the original, with the setting moved from Paris to Brooklyn’s Coney Island.
“It was the place,” Lloyd Webber told London’s Times newspaper. “Even Freud went because it was so extraordinary … people who were freaks and oddities were drawn towards it because it was a place where they could be themselves.”
“Phantom: Love Never Dies” should be ready by the end of 2009, Weber said.
He hopes to have a historic simultaneous opening for the new production in three cities: on Broadway in New York, in London’s West End and in a major Asian capital, potentially Shanghai.
“The Phantom of the Opera” is based on an early 20th century story by French writer Gaston Leroux.
Since its debut in 1986, Lloyd Webber’s musical adaptation has been seen in more than 100 countries around the world and was even made into a feature film in 2004.
