Clive Owen will face political intrigue and danger in South America for the upcoming “Cartagena.”

The British actor is attached to star as an undercover agent investigating Colombian drug cartels in the 2929 Prods. film, which is named for a city on the country’s northern coast.

Michael Ross, who penned the horror flick “Turistas,” has signed on to write the screenplay.

The movie revolves around an undercover agent who gets mixed up in a complex trafficking plot and is soon battling for survival with drug dealers and international agents hot on his heels.

Colombia is also the setting of two other projects currently in the works that will follow the real-life rescue of 15 hostages from the rebel FARC group.

Owen will next appear in the global-arms drama “The International” and the thriller “Duplicity,” where he re-teams with his “Closer” co-star Julia Roberts.

He is currently shooting the single-parent drama “The Boys Are Back,” which, like the other films, is set for a 2009 release.
