The Farrelly brothers are reviving Larry, Curly and Moe for the modern age.

The filmmaking duo behind such comedies as “Dumb and Dumber” and “There’s Something About Mary” will direct and produce a big-screen adaptation of The Three Stooges for MGM.

The long-planned movie, which was also penned by the Farrellys, places the characters in contemporary times, with the storyline playing out over a series of 25- to 30-minute shorts.

“When the economy started turning, we felt like the world could use a Stooges slapfest,” Peter Farrelly told Daily Variety.

“Bobby and I haven’t done a real physical comedy in a while, and it’s the most exciting thing we could think of now, to have people go to the movie, see some great slapstick fun family humour.”

A tentative release date has been set for Nov. 20, 2009.

The Three Stooges began as a vaudeville act in 1925 and have since appeared in a number of TV specials, feature films and shorts.

As previously reported, the Farrellys are also working on a film adaptation of the Walter the Farting Dog books, with the Jonas Brothers slated to star.
