Eyes around the world will be focused on Mumbai, India on Dec. 7, when the city hosts the second edition of Live Earth.

This year’s concert for a climate in crisis will feature such international performers as Jon Bon Jovi and Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan, Live Earth organizers announced in Mumbai Thursday.

A more detailed lineup will be unveiled in the coming weeks.

Organizers Al Gore and Emmy-winning concert producer Kevin Wall decided to stage the event in Mumbai this year to bring attention to positive environmental action in the developing world.

“Live Earth’s mission is to cultivate grassroots and worldwide awareness of and solutions for environmental issues that affect us all,” Wall said. “And the world has a lot to learn from traditional Indian culture about sustainability.”

“India will be among the leading powers of the global economy in the coming decades,” added former U.S. vice-president Gore.

“As a democracy that is looked up to by many nations, especially for its commitment to inclusive growth for its diverse peoples, India has a major role to play in leadership by example for the climate crisis and sustainable development.”

Gore said India should take up that role by committing to have all of its new electricity generation come from renewable sources within the next 10 years.

According to the organizers, the event will follow environmentally-friendly guidelines such as recycling and using Indian lighting, staging and video companies to reduce waste in transportation.

The concert will do more than raise environment awareness. Proceeds from Live Earth India will go toward such projects as Light A Billion Lives, a campaign that aims to provide solar-powered lanterns to the estimated 1.6 billion people around the world who do not have access to electricity.

Last year’s Live Earth on July 7 spanned four continents and featured 150 acts performing over a 24-hour period.

A record two billion people around the world watched the event.
