So You Think You Can Dance Canada’s Tré Armstrong Is the Anti-Cowell

Posted by Irene Ogrodnik on September 17th, 2008

We have what it takes after all.

Hailed already as a smash hit, So You Think You Can Dance Canada brought in over 1.23 million viewers and danced away as the No. 1 show when it debuted two weeks ago.

Although still in the audition stages, Canadians have already proven they can tap, sway, contort, kick, street dance and perform triple axles (you know, that thing figure skaters do…on ice?). There’s nothing we can’t do.

And Tré Armstrong agrees.

“We have the best of the best of any dance show,” Armstrong tells andPOP.

Although a huge fan of the American version of SYTYCD, Armstrong believes that Canadians will bring forth something the U.S. version did not.

“In terms of choreography, [SYTYCDC] will show more diversity than the American show.”

So while it took our friends down south four seasons to finally include international dance styles like Bollywood dancing, SYTYCDC is expected to showcase different dance techniques right off the bat.

If you’ve seen the dance flick “How She Move,” you already know that Armstrong (who played Michelle) has quite the unique flare for urban street dance. The Canadian judge has worked with big names like Rihanna, Missy Elliott, Sean “Diddy” Combs and Jessica Alba – just to name a few. A true triple-threat (she’s a multi-talented dancer, actress and choreographer), Armstrong says the best part about judging on the show is the emotional roller coaster she goes through.

“I’m not one to cry in public but I find myself holding things back now,” she says. “I never had to do that on camera and it has broadened my horizons on how difficult a dancing life can be.” Armstrong reflects back to the Toronto audition where Amanda De Freitas performed to honour her recently deceased father.

But it’s not all tears when it comes to doing her job.

“[Fellow judge] Jean-Marc [Genereux] and I are like night and day. We are so different from one another yet we get along like pancakes and syrup.” They disagree, they agree and they laugh. A typical relationship—minus the drama.

And how about Blake McGrath? Is the dreamy choreographer— who was also a finalist on the very first season of SYTYCD— as crazy as people say he is?

“Yes he is,” laughs Armstrong. But that’s what makes him and other special guest judges like Mary Murphy so darn entertaining to watch.

We know that judges can sometimes be ruthless when it comes to criticizing a performance. But if you have seen the show so far, Armstrong’s critiquing style is different from other reality show judges (two words: Simon Cowell). Cowell destroys dreams; Armstrong provides them through her words of advice.

“Giving the choice to choose, choose not to lose” she says. “So if you are in the position to make the right decision, then make it and don’t complain afterwards.”

‘Cause no one likes a complainer. No one. And when it comes to dancing, what is there really to whine about?

While many may look up to dancers and choreographers like Armstrong for inspiration, Armstrong is motivated to dance by something that’s bigger than all of us:

The world.
